Myst is an adventure video game designed by the Miller brothers, Robyn and Rand. It was developed by Cyan, Inc., published by Broderbund, and initially released in 1993 for the Macintosh. In the game, the player travels via a special book to a mysterious island called Myst. From there, solving puzzles allows the player to travel to other worlds ("Ages"), which reveal the backstory of the game's characters and help the player make the choice of whom to aid. The player interacts with objects and walks to different locations by clicking on pre-rendered imagery.

Myst marked a segue for the Miller brothers from the kids' games market to adult-targeted games. They wanted to create a graphically impressive game with a nonlinear story and mystery elements. The game's design was limited by the small memory footprint of consoles (the original intended platform for the game) and by the slow speed of CD-ROM drives. The game was created on Macintosh computers and ran on the HyperCard software stack, though ports to other platforms subsequently required the creation of a new engine.

Development of Myst began in 1991.[4] The game's creative team consisted of brothers Rand and Robyn, with help from sound designer Chris Brandkamp, 3D artist and animator Chuck Carter, Richard Watson, Bonnie McDowall, and Ryan Miller, who together made up Cyan, Inc. Myst was the largest and most time-consuming collaboration Cyan had attempted at that point.[13] Cyan took inspiration from games like Zork, Star Wars' mythic universe, portals to other worlds like in C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, and the mysterious islands of old literature like the works of Jules Verne.[9] The game's name, as well as the overall solitary and mysterious atmosphere of the island, was inspired by the book The Mysterious Island by Verne.[2]

Solving the mystery of what happened, and why, eventually leads you to travel to other worlds, called Ages. Ostensibly you're there to gather red and/or blue pages for a pair of bickering brothers, Sirrus and Achenar (played, interestingly, by creators and brothers Rand and Robyn Miller), but the puzzles are the real meat of Myst.

What makes Myst work isn't the puzzles or its bare-bones story, but the atmosphere that surrounds all of that. The Library's brass and polished wood are warm and cozy, while the Selenitic Age's jagged crystals are a mystical dream. There are also hints of menace, and dark secrets to uncover, but never jump-scares. The hints of a larger world, and a grander story, are still exciting, and make even small discoveries feel like revelations.

Part of what made Myst astounding in 1993 was its then-cutting edge 3D graphics. realMyst is decidedly not cutting edge, but neither is it retro or nostalgic in appearance. It's kind of an uncomfortable middle area, looks-wise. If I'm being honest, Jonathan Blows' The Witness does a better job capturing and updating the look and feel of Myst, but realMyst still manages to convey the original's enthralling aura of mystery, even if it doesn't look stunning.

Enter a world where nothing is as it seems... and adventure knows no bounds!
Journey to an island world eerily tinged with mystery... where every rock, every scrap of paper, every fleeting sound holds a clue to an ancient mystery. Enter, if you dare, a starkly beautiful landscape shrouded in intrigue and injustice. Only your wits and imagination hold the power to unlock the shocking betrayal of ages past!
Lose yourself in fantastic virtual exploration, now more compelling than ever in the stunning Myst Masterpiece Edition. Breathtaking graphical realism blurs the line between fantasy and reality, challenging your wits, instincts, and powers of observation like never before. The fantasy beckons... can you resist its call?

Many gamers play videogames for escapism. If escaping somewhere a little more sedate than futuristic battlefields or zombie infested post-apocalyptic wastelands is your thing, Myst might just be the kind of game you can get lost in. Set on a beautiful but surreal island, you must explore the mysterious locations and solve the various puzzles to uncover pages left behind by the mysterious scholar Atrus. Players are free to explore the island and tackle the puzzles at their own pace, making Myst a game that appeals to the more cerebral player. Originally released in 1995, the game went on to become one of the best selling PC games ever and the series is second only to The Sims in total sales worldwide.

The tone of Myst is difficult to describe. It is otherworldly in its sense of strange mystery; it is ethereal in its feeling of magic and uncertainty; and it is haunting in its pervasive loneliness. Even in its original incarnation I remember finding the ages of Myst to be somewhat disturbing. There is a melancholy feeling to exploring worlds that feel so thoroughly abandoned despite seeming recently populated. Adding to this is the incredible sound design, which holds up perhaps better than any other element of Myst. Music is not constant, but sound always is. The use of soundscapes and music is always intentional and perfectly accentuates the experience.

Puzzle and adventure fans will enjoy Myst IV Revelation, the penultimate title in the critically acclaimed and best-selling Myst franchise, which has sold over 12 million copies worldwide since the release of the first Myst title in 1993. The mythical adventure story of mystery, beauty and betrayal, combined with the breathtaking graphics that have made the Myst series a cult favourite, have earned Myst IV Revelation the position as finalist in the PC Action/Adventure Game of the Year category in the prestigious Interactive Achievement Awards that took place earlier this year. The new game will join a number of other critically acclaimed Myst titles in the Focus range, including Myst III Exile, Myst Masterpiece Edition, and Uru - Ages Beyond Myst. The eagerly anticipated finale to the series, Myst V - End of Ages, is set for release later this year and is certain to have a strong impact on demand for the re-released titles.

In Myst IV Revelation, the gamer takes a journey into a world full of secrets and betrayal that surround a family's shattered past. Players will finally learn the fate of Sirrus and Achenar, two sinister villains introduced in the original Myst. They also must uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a little girl, venturing inside the intense and dangerous worlds of the two villainous brothers.

The vintage games chart from specialist web retailer Good Old Games this week emphasizes the glut of high quality detective and puzzle-solving adventure games on PC ahead of Sony's February 2010 release of the intriguing PlayStation 3 murder mystery, Heavy Rain. All the games clock in at less than $10, most of them under $6.

Elsewhere in the charts, more mystery solving abounds. The Myst series is invigorated by RealMyst, a 3D remake of the 2D point-and-click intuitive adventure which was the best-selling PC game for almost a decade following its 1993 release. A graphically improved 2D Myst: Masterpiece Edition appears at chart position ten, and the game's sequel Riven pops up at number eight.
