Having walked the ground it is very uneven and has a few potholes that one could break an ankle in -- there are also rocks which are starting to climb above ground level

its important to do things right the first time -- its not just a matter of installing the equipment and putting mulch in.  All the things that have been outlined are easily done and should be done for our children's safety.

This is not the first time I have heard of this suggestion, and I tend to agree because I want the playground equipment in... so we can work on fencing and lighting issues.

What do you think?

In my humble opinion you should just let the city bring the play ground equipment in. If it is indeed
in good shape as your council person has indicated. Planning a viewing seems like a waste.
Planning how to prepare for the delivery, mulch ect seems like a set in the right direction.
I would hate to have another season go by without a playground for your kids. Debra

All-

Mr Doherty will ask the city to give us a few dates for next week so someone can view the equipment.  If none of the times work or we can't come to some kind of agreement than we should just ask that the city move forward with installing the equipment.  I have seen many emails from local parent suggesting we move forward with the installation, and I'm in agreement, but let's provide one viewing opportunity for anyone who is concerned to go look at it.  If by the end of next week we don't have any negative feedback that's strong enough to suggest the equipment shouldn't be installed (ie safety reasons or additional cost that we'd have to cover) than we should just move forward with installation.

Thank you to Bob for keeping on top of this initiative!

Best

Thank you for your note Tracy--

I fully agree that we should move forward with installing the equipment but I believe we all know also that the grounds themselves need to be worked on first.  As I mentioned before rocks are sticking up from the ground.  This was mentioned at our Sunday meeting.   David Kroop of the Friends of Barker Park told us that there is probably lots of rubble raising to the surface from the old City Hall which once stood at the site.  During our walkthrough there were also potholes in the ground where one could break their ankle in.  We gotta do this right for safety reasons

I also went up to Knickerbacker Park yesterday and took some pictures.  There are in the PICASA album I uploaded just click here:

What I liked about this park is the way they prepared the ground itself for the playground equipment--the City dug down four inches or more and removed whatever debris was there -- likes the rocks like we have a Barker.  Then then outlined the play perimeter with 4 by 4 timbers, filled in the excavated area with good clean soil and put wood chips on top. This makes the play area completely safe!!

I also had a conservation yesterday with Robert and discussed the Playground with him and the need to bring in the City Engineer into the equation. My thoughts were that the City can do a "quick and dirty" site plan and get the preliminary ground work underway now so as not to delay the installation of the playground equipment itself.

I too thank Robert for his very active and engaged involvement and look forward to moving this on more next week.

I have copied Deputy Mayor Ryan, City Engineer Reeves and Parks Director Rogers to add them to the thread and appraise them of all of this.
