Hi Downtown community gardens crew,

I know that your focus is on the downtown area, but I wanted to let you know about a cool new project that I heard about that is happening in the Atwood area (more info below). It looks like there’s interest in putting in a green roof (if that’s how they’re defining “eco-roof”). Thought I’d share, if any of you are interested in sharing your knowledge with them.

Best,

Nicole

Kim, Dave -

I hope all's well.  As you know, I've been looking at purchasing a building along Atwood.  I've tacked some information below (please let me know if it doesn't send well).

Next Thursday, we plan to present the idea to the neighborhood association.  Between now and then, we are canvasing the neighborhood to present the idea -- and, more important, to listen to ideas and feedback about the project.  If you know any of the neighbors in the vicinity, I'd be thrilled if you could help make an introduction.  Or, if you have suggestions about who to talk with further about the project, please let me know.

I really think that this can be a great addition to the neighborhood, and will reinforce the spirit and attitude of Atwood.  The project really hinges on the neighborhood's acceptance of our ideas.

Phil

Dear Neighbor:

This spring, we are planning to purchase the warehouse space at 2439 Atwood (next door to Bunky’s). We are excited about converting the space from its former light-industrial use to a multi-use community gathering space.  During this process, we welcome your thoughts and questions.

We are two local “kids”: Phil Busse grew up in Madison, and recently returned after 15 years on the west coast, and bought a 1924 house in the Atwood neighborhood. Kris Breyer is the manger for Madison Sourdough on Willy Street.

We have exciting plans for the space: The five studio apartments there will remain, but will be updated. The first floor space will be converted to commercial space—half rented to local non-profits that emphasize sustainability; the other half converted to a neighborhood bistro. In addition, we are installing a moderate-sized, high-tech conference room, which we will offer as a free space for neighborhood meetings.

We are most excited about the exterior space, a portion to be converted to a public garden that will host afternoon food carts for lunch dining; in the evening, the space will be used for family and community dining. We also are considering installing an eco-roof, and will add a large bike parking lot to service the bus line and the surrounding businesses.

We very much look forward to promoting and reinforcing the Atwood neighborhood’s commitment to community, sustainability and style.
