DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY GARDENS GROUP PRESENTS “ROOFTOP GARDENING AND THE NEW
CENTRAL PUBLIC LIBRARY”
Madison has a unique opportunity to be the first city in the world to
put rooftop community gardens on top of its central public library.
Local food is the wave of the future, and in the urban environment the
sky's the limit.
Rooftop gardens are springing up all over the United States. Just south
of us, Chicago sells honey from beehives on the City Hall’s expansive
rooftop garden. Numerous restaurant and grocery store owners in “the
windy city” grow vegetables on their roofs. Our eastern neighbor
Milwaukee is home to a rooftop CSA (community-supported agriculture)
garden.
As plans for the new Madison Central Public Library are being fleshed
out, we ask,“Why not a community garden on the roof?”
Madison has a long history of embracing community gardens. In a place
like downtown where green space comes at a premium, it should be our
highest priority to create infrastructure for growing fresh produce.
Other cities all over the world have figured out that rooftops present a
wonderful opportunity to address all at once many challenges that
downtowns face. Currently in Madison there are murmurs among downtown
dwellers and city officials alike of the first library rooftop community
garden ever.
The Downtown Community Gardens group invites you to join us in this very
important discussion. We will be hosting a public meeting to describe
the potential for a community garden atop the new library downtown. Our
meeting will begin with a presentation at 7:00 PM on Thursday November
29th at the current central public library, room 204, with an open
question-answer session to follow.
In the meantime, call your alder and contact the library board to let
them know
that you support a rooftop community garden for the new library.
