Please review announcements below, plan for the group, and provide any questions or feedback. The learning group aspect is meant to be more about covering a basic foundation rather than a journal club critiquing new research or developments, unlike the format of most of the interest groups/mini-fellowships.

Bobak volunteered to facilitate next meeting while I was composing this email! Any interested hosts, check out the attached doc for possible topics.

Dr. Verma seems eager to meet with us, and Dr. Mehta is corresponding with him about that.

Also from our last meeting, here are some resources this group may be interested in.
NEJM Catalyst - interesting blog posts, occasional will host free, virtually accessible conferences
American Association for Physician Leadership - physician execs specifically

Best,
Angela

Hi all,
For everyone: Some helpful things
  • House Staff Quality Council looking for help updating the Handbook & clinic referral information. Increase chances of our clinic referrals actually leading to appointments. Contact myself & rober...@downstate.edu
  • KingsAmbCare.com that has lots of useful clinic resources (have the EM/IMs been hiding this all along?? Did you know there are Creole Diabetes classes available to KCH pts??)
  • EMRA Fellowship Guide (free) - covers ALL fellowships including intro to the subspecialties and application tips
  • Travel Grants to ACEP Leadership & Advocacy Conference (from EMRA & NY ACEP) - classroom and practical experience advocating for EM on Capitol Hill. I will be organizing the resident curriculum thru EMRA. 2 of our residents benefited from this award in 2016.
The Administration Mini-Fellowship will be a learning and networking group. If you are interested in the behind-the-scenes business and administration that makes the ED run better or worse, this group is for you! We welcome anyone from those who are trying to figure out what "administration" means to those who are already set on a career in health care leadership. Dr. Mehta is our adviser. Our activities will include the following.
  • We will agree on a curriculum of topics, assign a topic facilitator, and meet to discuss.
    • Example topics include
      • Operations: ED throughput, staffing models, process improvement (six sigma, lean)
      • Management: managing teams, conflict resolution, running meetings
      • Finance: budgets, billing & coding
      • Medicolegal: prudent layperson, EMTALA, malpractice
      • Industry overviews: pharma, medical device, insurance
      • Career: how to network, whether to pursue admin fellowship
  • Host networking events with health care leaders at KCH/NYCHHC/Downstate and beyond.
  • Keep each other aware of local and national events, resources, and organizations that will facilitate our learning and career advancement.
  • Joint events with the Health Policy Interest Group
If you are interested in joining, please add yourself to our list-serve as most future communications will go through there. To join the list-serve, login to your Google account, and go to https://groups.google.com/d/forum/downstateadmin
If you want to help run the group, let me know.

Best,
Angela & the Admin Mini-Fellows
