Itseems like I can't get a printer that "just works". I recently decided to replace our HP X476 printer with something nicer and bigger, an HP Color LaserJet M880 (background story & review in German). And of course there is something that needs fixing:

The Chrome browser on Linux wouldn't let us print in color, even though all other applications had no problem to print in color. Even with Chrome color printing was possible, if one used the system printing dialog instead of the built-in Chrome print preview.

Fixing color printing support in Chrome on Linux for HP M880, solves Chrome Bug 1035009 for the HP Color LaserJet flow MFP M880 printer. The effect of this printer driver is that the Chrome browser shows the Color/Black and White toggle in the print preview:

With the original printer driver the Chrome browser (and potentially all Chromium based browsers) on Linux cannot print in color, only in grayscale. While one can use the system printing dialog as a workaround, it is inconvenient to do so and the system printing dialog doesn't show a preview of the printout as the browser printing dialog.

The root cause are hard coded strings in the Chrome printing stack that match only for some HP printer drivers, while other HP printer drivers simply use other strings for the same thing. Chrome wants to offer the user a simplified configuration for printing, but for that Chrome needs to parse and understand all printer drivers. Sadly the printer drivers on Linux don't follow any standard in their internal structure, so that the Chrome developers had to add a lot of code to deal with the printer drivers of all the printer vendors.

I have a department that recently received a new HP Color LaserJet flow MFP M880 with the stapler stacker mailbox. Currently it has the HP Color LaserJet flow MFP M880 PCL 6 HP Color LaserJet flow MFP M880 - STAPLER driver and when a user prints out anything it staples the sheets when it prints. In order for it not to staple, I have to manualy check "none" for staples in finishing section of properties. We have another printer using the same drivers and it is not happening to that one.

The current Dec 2020 download of the HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS has a driver in it for the HP Color Laserjet CP 2020 series. As HP provided no drivers after Mavericks for this device, this may be your only hope of using this printer.

Hi Viking appreciate your assistance. I have a HP Color LaserJet CP 2025 Printer, SN CNGS415998, Product Number: CB495A that stopped working when I installed Mac OS 11. I have searched high and low w/o success. HP's site -en/document/c05900790 takes me to "HP LaserJet - Older HP printers with macOS drivers"

My conclusion is that this is a legacy 32 bit product that is not going to function on 64 bit architecture. No notes on the web site anywhere that I can find. (I will admit that one time long ago the solution was right in front of me and my parents said "Son if it was a snake it would have bitten you!" So I am hoping that is again the case and not that, once again, progress has moved on leaving my trusted printer at the station. Your thoughts?

As fellow users, and not Apple badged staff, we don't respond to ASAP instructions. When you provide the full model name and number of your printer, we may be able to determine if it is an HP driver signature issue; or if HP supports your printer, either at all, or just not on Big Sur.

Once I update to MacPro OS BigSur v 11.0.1 the HP printer color laserjet pro MFP M281fdw stopped working. After reloading the driver via the CD that came with the printer, it now takes hours before printer to start printing. IS there an update for the new operating system? What may I try to get this printer to print ?

I found nothing for Mac OS 11.1 on that website. Also, try reaching a human to talk to. Impossible, frustrating, and a waste of time. I now have to buy a new printer, hoping that it will be compatible with my upgraded operating system. Can't believe I'll purchase an HP again. Reaching someone for a simple yes or no answer is like pi--ing in the wind!
