Outof the blue, my type tool has been acting funny in Illustrator CS6. Generally my text boxes or bounding boxes are outlined in blue. However, now they are black. I'm not sure what instigated the change. Now I am typing in illustrator and it won't show any spaces between words. Everythinglookslikethis. In the character pannel, the kerning is set to auto and tracking is set to 0. Does anyone know what is going on? What are these black text boxes of death?

Thanks. I guess that means that the color of the text box does not determine the behavoir of the type inside it. Good to know. I'm now back to blue, but still having problems with the spaces. I am using times new roman.

The default is Minimum 80%, Desired 100%, Maximum 133%. If your settings were the same, most likely something else is affecting the spacing and changing these settings is compensating but with this settings the font should look fine.

In your screen shot the settings in the Character panel are for the space before the T where the insertion point is. Make sure the whole text is selected (highlighted) or press the Esc key on your keyboard to switch to object selection.

I am having this issue. When I use some art files from customers. This will fix the type but if I open that art again, I have to do that step again before I can add new type. You would think after correcting the spacing it would stay corrected. This is a repeatable issue for over 6 years now. How do I get the spacing to stay fixed in these art files that I have to use repeatable.

There is an older post from one year ago, but I think the problem is still unsolved. Thus I open a new topic: Does anybody have a workaround for using type in shapr? I want to use type (single shapes or words not longer text) and extrude it as 3d bodies. When I import single Character shapes as DXF from Illustrator most curves get messed up.

It can happen that if you draw a shape in Illustrator which is filled, there will be some duplicates and weird things around the control points when exporting. Try to hide the inner fill and export just the contour of your shapes.

just to inform you - I had worked with Illustrator DXF files before and just tried to import a text set in Helvetica Neue - Medium without issues. The letter forms look ok and I could extend them without issues. Today I used the latest Illustrator (v25.0) and the actual Shapr3D.

I played around with illustrator and export settings and the screenshot shown is the best (least annoying) result with as many export options unchecked as possible. But still the shapes get messed up: all the edges are round, not sharp.

When I import an Illustrator DXF into Autodesk Fusion 360 I see sharp letter corners. The lines and curves are separate, none of the lines include angels at the corners. In Shapr3D some lines are concatenated at the corners to form an angle and this corner is rounded. So Shapr3D might change the lines contained in the DXF during import?

By the way - in Autodesk Fusion 360 the tested letter forms where shown equally: The letter as type, the letter converted to an outline and the letter converted to an outline and ungrouped. (While exporting I activated the Illustrator option Outline Text)

I recently lost the ability to edit type in an extensive, mission-critical Illustrator file. Upon hovering over live text, I first see a pencil cursor with circle/line indicating "can't edit". When I attempt a workaround by selecting text first with the direct select arrow, then type tool, I get the error message: "This type was created in a different version of Illustrator. Editing the text may cause some changes to your text layout. Basic formatting will not be affected. Do you want to continue?" (Yet I created the entire file myself in Illustrator CS6 and was the only one manipulating it in the same version!)

When I select "Continue", then click on live type anywhere in the document, the subsequent error message simply states "Can't edit the type". And I really can't. Not sure what to do, as my whole process depends on copying and modifying chunks of content throughout this extensive web app mock, in which months of labor have been invested.

The font I'm using is Source Sans Pro, an Adobe font I downloaded from +Sans+Pro. It has worked flawlessly all year. Absolutely puzzled and trying not to panic on deadline. Thanks for any insight you all have!

If the other posters did not encounter an error of "This type was created in a different version of Illustrator. Editing the text may cause some changes to your text layout. Basic formatting will not be affected. Do you want to continue?" you should start your own post as your problem is coming from another cause.

Well, did you install any other fonts recently? Changed system language settings? Changed settings on one of the text-centric panels like Glyph substitution options and all that? Have you tried to open the file on another system?

Yes, I upgraded machines to brand new MacBook Pro, upgraded work CS to subscription CC like I have at home studio, and unfortunately the bug followed my affected file(s) through all of that. Quite pernicious. My accidental workaround is described above, with Dhanuka's answer being partly correct. Copy/pasting content, though highly impractcal, became my only option as my desperation grew (which I discovered as a workaround on my own). In that process, though, of copying from the original seemeingly corrupt doc, I was able to rather inexplicably break through the error messaging loop & edit the type again, THANK GOODNESS.

No, different font. I get loads of error messaging when I copy/paste: "Can't edit the type". I tried re-installing illustrator CC 2 times today, cannot even try to type within existing text. Type is Open sanss and Roboto Slab. most of the time illustrator just quits, without notifications afterwards. Really odd, never experienced this before... Document is 800 MB. But never been a problem before..

2.) Or when I do have highlighted text and try to re-type the word, it won't and a pop-up appears saying "Can't edit live text." I went to "Type" in the menu bar but Legacy Text is grayed out. I cut and pasted into a new document, same deal.

Simply reselect the path with the Direct Selection Tool and reapply a stroke or fill to it after you've added your text. The path is still there. However, adding Type on a Path to it removes all strokes and fills.

Doing this duplicate on top trick is used an awful lot in illustrator so there is a shortcut command: Paste in Front; Cmd+F which puts it 'ontop' and Paste in Back; Cmd+B which puts it 'below'. Either one is good for you on this occasion!

I have the same problem when copying and pasting text from MS OneNote 2016 into Figma. It pastes the text as an image.

There are no options in OneNote that I am aware of to copy objects as an SVG; and this would not make sense for text anyway.

It feels like a bug to me that only happens when copying from certain apps. I can copy the same text from OneNote to Notepad++ and then to Figma and it is pasted correctly as a text object.

N.B. i have just filed a bug report about this.

I am experiencing the same bug. I am using latest illustrator 2021, 25.3.1 updated from creative cloud just yesterday i believe, and Figma Desktop app 98.14. I never ever had this problem before, core install of both tools worked fine. Now i just installed windows 10 and started using those again, and this happened.

Ok, so it is Illustrator problem? In that case, can someone please confirm is it working only with 25.0. because there are like 5-6 versions before 25.3.1 when you list older versions in creative cloud.

Let us use the Type tool to start with. Click on a blank area on an artboard. You will see a flashing vertical line, just as you would in word processing programs. This means that you can start typing.

Then, we can change the kernel (bottom box on the left). The kernel is the space between characters. We can also change the tracking (bottom box on the right). The tracking is the adjustment of space for groups of characters or blocks of text.

You can then see the Glyphs that you can use. Scroll down within the panel to look at all of them. You can also set the font type and style for your glyphs or scroll in or out to get a closer look at the glyphs shown in the panel by using these buttons.

Now that we have learned how to format text, let us learn about the rest of the Type tools that you can use, starting with the Area Type tool. Remember, the Area Type tool is grouped with the Type tool. It looks like this, . With this tool, you can add text inside the path of any object.

Each time I'm typing and press Return or Enter Illustrator goes out of type and selects the text box instead.

I'm having to type in Notes or an Email to create the correct type. Please help.

I've check all my text settings including Leading. I've also checked and this works normally in Illustrator 26.5 so it means I'm using that and not the Beta version.
