Hello,
sorry if this is inconvenient for anyone, but I was wondering if any of you still receive SSI for your child(ren) with Down Syndrome? Or if anyone has the secret to dealing with the social security administration. My daughter with Down Syndrome is 9 years old, we’ve never had a problem with SSI until 2023 when payments stopped completely. I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice or similar experiences they can share with me.

Hope you all have the best day!

Marissa,

Sorry you lost SSI for your daughter. But since she's under 18 your income plays into whether or not she's eligible for SSI. I lost SSI for my daughter when she was five then was able to get it back when she was 18 even though she still lived at home. And as you work with DDA remember your answers to their questions need to be based off of the worst days you have with your daughter. You can give me a call if you'd like and I can expand more.

Hi Marissa,
Sorry to hear the SSA cut off your daughters SSI. The amount of SSI she recieves is based off of the household income. I remember recieving letters from SSA saying my daughter had been overpaid and they were reducing her SSI until the overage was repaid.
Ive found that having all my household financial information in order and doing research on the SSI rules, especially for submitting appeals to SSA. When dealing with the people of SSA i simply treated them with respect, provided all the information required and asked if there was anything else they needed. Id follow up a week later asking for status and when a decision was likely to be made. My daughters SSI stopped when she started recieving Social Security when i retired.
Hope this helped.
