Hello, Just in the last week all 3 of our computers are doing the same thing. We open Adobe Digital Editions and get a Blank Screen. You can not see books / bookshelves or the library. There are definitely books there that we have borrowed & downloaded from the Public Library. But we can't see them to be able to read them. Nor can we see our E-Book Readers when we connect those to the PC.
I tried to Unistall & Re-Install ADE on one of the Laptops and it worked for one night. The next day we were back to a blank screen. So I tried to Unistall, Rename the "My Digital Editions" Folder to "My Digital Editions.Old" then Reinstalled ADE. Again, it worked for one night and the next day we were back to a blank screen. This is obviously very frustrating and since it is happening on 3 different computers I can't blame the computer! Does anyone have any suggestions.
I have had the same problem for about a month now. I even tried reverting back to an older version of Digital Editions and it's happening there too. Adobe Digital Editions has never been great software. Before this problem started, it would constantly freeze after I imported .acsm files and I'd have to force close it through the task manager. And now this. I can no longer check out books from the library because I have no way to read them. OverDrive needs to make a few software options available to read ebooks. If Adobe had some competition, they might start giving a damn about the quality of their software and provide some kind of support. Anybody with a monopoly is inevitably going to get complacent, which they've clearly done. As it is, the software feels and looks obsolete and is poorly maintained. It's like a relic from 2010 shoved in a corner with the label "Good Enough" slapped on. Adobe should be embarrassed to have their name on it.
It's frustrating. Apparently the problem has to do with an incompatibility between ADE 1.7 and ADE 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 or 4.5. And is that ADE does not allow changing the directory "My Digital Editions" and hence the conflict.
I had the same frustrating problem! How I fixed it was to rename my digital editions folder and move it to another drive then I deleted all instances of My Digital Editions folders on drive C of which there were three. I then ran the installer for version 4.5.6 and it completed and recreated a new digital editions folder and magically populated it with the last 20 or so books that I had borrowed. The program now opens and closes again without error and books can be returned once more.
During the problem period which lasted for 3 weeks I had to install 4.5.6 each time I wanted to borrow a book in order for the download to occur. In this state there was never any visible bookshelf and the program would not close on its own.
I downloaded adobe digital editions. It works fine, except I can't return a book when I'm done reading it. The Return Borrowed Item is not in bold print to hightlight to use to return a book. Any ideas how to correct this problem. Thanks
Thank you for replying to my problem. I started with the program a year ago, and I have always been able to return books when I am done reading them. Yes, these are e-books from my public library. The book is to be returned by Dec. 1. I called and talk to one of the ladies at the library, and she said uninstall the program and download the updated version, which I did. And I still can not return the book I have. Thanks nickiedog
Hello, did you ever get this problem sorted? I've got my full quota of library books and all of a sudden the 'return' option isn't hi-lighted. I'm going on holiday tomorrow and I have 8 days on some and 14 days on others. VERY FRUSTRATING! Added to this, I'm next in line for 2 books that I've been waiting a couple of months for
Hi, sorry not to have replied to you, not being rude, I was out of the country without internet. Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try to contact them on Monday although with library cut backs I'm not sure who deals with ebooks at the moment
For years I have downloaded library e-books (epub format) to Adobe Digital Editions and then moved them to my Nook. Early in December 2016, they would not download to ADE and I get the message "unable to download. License Server Communications Problem: E_STREAM_ERROR". My daughter lives in another town and is having the same problem trying to borrow e-books from her library. How do we fix this? Our libraries just want to say it is a problem with our computers and/or Nooks!
I have been working on the same problem for over two weeks. I have worked with two library districts. With one of the librarian;s sat with me and tried going through the chat for over 2 hours that day and I spent .5 hours today, but in the end they-3 different people on Adobe chat-sent me here saying it would be taken care of. I have updated my version to the latest, but the glitch seems to be that the email even in the new version is an old one that I have not had access to for years. I asked for the 2 of the people in the chats to change it or fix it, they would send me to the forums. I am getting very frustrated as this is my only way to download books.
I have the same problem, I could not download an ebook from the Library to Digital Editions, I was told by a library person that there is problems with older versions of ADE and that I needed to un-install and re-install, I did this managed to get through and Authorize my Computer (Desk top PC) only to find that I still can not open a library book in ADE, with a technical person within the library who looks after the audio and e section, when going through stuff to do with ADE we discovered that we have a problem with the ACSM file it is not connected with ADE I asked the Adobe technical chat line who are getting paid for sitting there NOT answering questions and telling me I need to speak with an expert in the forum, to which I have only found this page so far .... so not much help there but I defiantly need help to get to be able to read my books again on my desk top PC
What I tried deauthorizing/reauthorizing ADE on my computer, uninstalling ADE 4.5.2/reinstalling ADE 4.5.3, uninstalling 4.5.3/reinstalling 3.0, uninstalling 3.0/reinstalling 4.0 (Installation issues for Adobe Digital Editions 4.0). I made sure that acsm and epub files were associated with ADE.
I finally read on one post (My digital editions has stopped working ) that once ADE crashes, it tries to reopen in its previous state and crashes again. I did as that poster suggested: I copied my ADE folder to another location in My Documents, then deleted the original folder. When I tried to reopen ADE and download a book--it finally worked and I was able to download my library book!! While reloading the books from my backup file individually hasn't worked, I have been able to download additional books from a second library into ADE with no problem so far (fingers crossed that that continues).
Since some time my ADE 4.5 will not open. It appears on the taskbar, and putting my cursor on it I get a picture of it as it it should look if fully opened, but when clicking on it nothing happens; the program does not come up on the screen. Since several months back I am running Windows 10 and have installed all offered updates, but I don't think that is what is causing the problem, which has only started recently. Or could it perhaps have been caused by a recent Windows 10 update?
I got that also as one of the errors I have experienced over about a week.I finally uninstalled averything and renamed the "My digital Editions" foldersearched the registryand deleted everything ADE, searched the hard drive and deleted any other pieces of the programs, then reinstalled on a usb flash drive. That worked. I had a little trouble finding the "mydigital editions" ile again but did find it and was able to convert the ADEs to Kindle and regular acrobat and save them. It is sad when we are forced to use a free ptrogram and then the very rich and successful owncompany refuses to support the program because it is free, though compulsory. That experience has just decreased the chances of my ever paying for the new programs. I still have a working CS6, Acrobat X and XI, and lots of Corel and other products tht are as good as Adobe.
I struggled with this issue for a while. Then I spoke to a librarian, who tried ADE on her home computer and found it worked. I am guessing it doesn't work on my computer because I have a work subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud which somehow must interfere with my copy of ADE. So I downloaded ADE on to my partner's computer (he doesn't have a subscription to Creative Cloud) and lo and behold! it worked!
I have had this problem for ages, I read the suggestion of downloading to the "D" drive and I went through this process and saw it gave the option to browse where you wanted to download to, I noticed then that previously it was downloading the file to the cloud, so I selected the "C" drive on my pc insteaed, now it is working.
Had similar issue, all I could do was find a random old link to edition 4.0 and install that. Seems to work so far, touch wood. Follow these instructions: -editions/kb/cant-install-digital-editions.html
Can anybody believe the internet is full of people having the same problem since 2015? A quick search for any ADE DRM issue returns 800k+ responses. I'm sooo tired of trying to get this piece of sh..ware to work. Not mentionning the broken link to to download he seamingly better V3.0. Grow up a spine Adobe and fix your products.
You can try uninstalling the software with 10bit uninstaller and make sure to remove any leftovers. Delete the folder in C:\Users\Current User\Documents\My digital editions. Then reinstall into a new directory under a new user profile or the public one- C:\Users\New user\New folder or C:\Users\Public\New folder. I used the public one and the software works again.
Had the exact same issue. Just stopped working today. Step 3 "Changing the directory" of the following article fixed the problem for me:
Adobe Digital Editions Not Responding: How to Solve (fixthephoto.com)
Instead of letting the program install in the default "Program Files (x86)" folder, I changed the install location to the "Program Files" folder. Hope this helps other lost souls struggling with this garbage software.
