Written by Richelle Mead, the Vampire Academy books were published from 2007 to 2010. The novels focus on Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway, a teenaged dhampir (half-human, half-vampire) who trains to become a guardian to her best friend, the moroi (royal vampires that are mortal and possess magical powers) Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir, at St. Vladimir's Academy. Mead later developed a spinoff novel series titled Bloodlines, which was published from 2011 to 2015.
In addition to co-creating The CW's The Vampire Diaries (itself based on L.J. Smith's books), Plec developed The Originals, a spinoff TV show that ran for five seasons from 2013 to 2018. She subsequently created a second spinoff series, Legacies, which will return for its fourth season in the 2021-2022 broadcast season. As for MacIntyre, she played Sheriff Liz Forbes on The Vampire Diaries and would go on to serve as a writer/producer on both of its spinoffs.
Prior to the Peacock series, the first Vampire Academy book was adapted by director Mark Waters (Mean Girls, The Spiderwick Chronicles) and his brother Daniel Waters (the writer of Heathers) into the 2014 movie of the same name, with Zooey Deutsch and Lucy Fry starring as Rose and Lissa. However, plans for additional sequels were scrapped after the film bombed at the box office and earned largely negative reviews.
Vampire Academy has received awards such as Best Graphic Novel and Comics at the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards and its spin-off, Bloodline, has been nominated for awards like Best Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction, also at the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards. The Vampire Academy books have sold eight million copies to date, in thirty-five different countries.
It is also discovered throughout the course of the novel that Lissa has an ability to heal others. When Dimitri and Rose attempt to save Lissa, parts of their plan continually go wrong because Victor, the enemy, has put a lust charm on the two of them, rendering them virtually useless until Dimitri eliminates the charm. At the end of the novel, Dimitri admits his feelings for Rose, but their relationship remains forbidden due to age difference and complications in Guardianship.
Richelle Mead, the mind behind the series, was born in 1976. She studied at the University of Michigan, and writes in the fantasy and youth genres. Currently, Mead lives in Seattle, Washington, and has received three degrees (Bachelor of General Studies, Master of Comparative Religion, and Master of Teaching).
Currently, Vampire Academy holds extremely high name-recognition due to its release into theaters on February 7, 2014. The film was announced in 2010, filming began in the summer of 2013, and it was soon announced that the stars of the movie would be Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Danila Kozlovsky. The title of the movie was quickly changed from Vampire Academy to Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters.
The filming was done in Europe, a large amount in the United Kingdom, as well as the United States in Montana. Most of the work done in America, however, represents the still-frame photography shown in the picture, rather than the actors themselves. There was also a graphic novel released based on the books in August of 2011, adapted by Leigh Dragoon and illustrated by Emma Vieceli. The sequel to this graphic novel was released in May of 2012.
Apart from the film and the graphic novels, there is also a spin-off series titled Bloodlines. Bloodlines follows several characters that were introduced in the original series, and is told from the point of view of Sydney Safe, an alchemist.

From the creator of The Greatest Thing, a new YA graphic novel about a boy dealing with a chronic illness who finds a new friend in a vampire classmate, perfect for fans of Vampire Academy. After health problems wiped out their first few weeks of school, Perley and Amandine are both starting their Junior year behind their classmates, and both have major changes in their lives that they're struggling to get used to. Perley was diagnosed with diabetes over the summer, and worries that all these new medical expenses will be a hardship on his family. And Amandine, part of a venerated family of vampires, has been turned much younger than she expected to be after a car accident nearly killed her. The two of them form a fast friendship - both feel a little out of step with their old lives, and as a bonus, it turns out that Amandine's new vampire abilities can help Perley save money on blood glucose tests. But as the year goes on, they're forced to admit that maybe their coping strategies - and their blood-sipping-turned-romance - aren't working out so well after all. Will they be able to get their lives back to normal? Or will both have to figure out new ways for their "normal" to look?
