Fetters, psychodots set for '666th' show

BY CHRIS VARIAS • ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR • NOVEMBER 27, 2009

Rob Fetters picked up his commercial-composition career where he left
it. Fetters - singer and guitarist for the local groups the Raisins,
the Bears and psychodots - quit the Downtown music-production studio
Sound Images a couple years ago. After a non-compete clause expired,
he went into business for himself.

Fetters' Web site (www.robfetters.com) offers samples of his recent
commercial credits, including promo spots for the hit TV show "Lost."

"I turned down a lot of work," he says. "Living through a non-compete
is a gut-check."

Through the transition to self-employment, Fetters turned to a
constant in his life, the long-running power-pop trio psychodots. He
talked about the band and its yearly Thanksgiving-weekend show.

Question: You're billing this as the 666th annual show. How accurate
is that number?

Answer: We've played generally around this time since we were in high
school, and we were in high school in the '70s. As psychodots, we
probably started doing it around 1990 or so, because by that time the
Bears were done.

Q: Does the band require lots of rehearsal time since the gigs are
infrequent, or is it second nature?

A: It's both, because we try to dig up some old songs. There are
certain songs that actually got radio airplay that we try to play like
the record, and that keeps people happy. Our really hard-core fan base
likes obscure songs that we can barely play, because we don't really
remember how they went. So we do practice. We rehearse and argue like
crazy about the right way to do stuff. We're just a bunch of old
maids, really. The bickering is hilarious. The other day Chris
(Arduser), our drummer, who we call Deathy...

Q: What do you call him?

A: We call him Deathy. He writes a lot of songs about the grave and
stuff like that. He and (bass player) Bob (Nyswonger) were bickering
about something, and Deathy actually said, "Even if I'm wrong, I'm
right," and he really meant it.

Q: I was thinking about Nick Lowe when I was getting ready to talk to
you, because he gave up power-pop for a country-gentleman act. Is
power-pop a young man's game?

A: I imagine I will be able to play as well as I can for a long time,
but singing really well, it takes some muscle to do that. So I think
the reason old guys stop doing it is it's such a pain to get in the
same room and agree with each other. I see that with our trio, and I
see that when we add Adrian Belew to the mix to become the Bears.
Instead of going down the river in speedboats, everybody has these big
ocean liners called their lives with dogs and kids and wives and
houses, and it's harder to get it together for that.
