The React / React Native Engineering Lead is responsible for defining and driving the technical vision for cross-platform mobile and web development using React and React Native within their product area. This role requires deep expertise in React Native alongside strong native iOS and Android development skills — enabling the lead to bridge cross-platform and native implementations effectively. The React / React Native Engineering Lead owns the cross-platform layer while maintaining accountability for the overall engineering health of the product, participating in Agile ceremonies, ensuring alignment to roadmaps and timelines, and collaborating across all technology layers to deliver cohesive digital experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Define and drive the technical vision for React, React Native, and native mobile development across the product area
Architect scalable, performant cross-platform mobile and web solutions that bridge cleanly with native iOS and Android
Establish and enforce best practices for performance, scalability, security, and code quality across React Native, iOS, and Android codebases
Lead technical decision-making and evaluate new technologies, frameworks, and architecture patterns across all mobile platforms
Create technical design specifications and translate high-level architecture into working software
React Native Development & Implementation
Lead feature development and enhancements for cross-platform mobile and web applications
Expert proficiency in React Native, React, Expo/EAS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern development workflows
Architect using the brownfield host-shell / mobile micro-frontend pattern, RN New Architecture (TurboModules, Fabric), Native Modules, and typed host bridge contracts
Implement modern state management patterns (Redux Toolkit, Zustand, Jotai)
Deep knowledge of performance optimization, memory management, and multithreading in cross-platform environments
Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Bitrise, Fastlane)
Write clean, testable, maintainable code across shared and platform-specific modules
Native iOS Development
Working knowledge of Swift, UIKit, SwiftUI, and Objective-C
Familiarity with modern iOS architectures (MVVM, VIPER, Clean Architecture)
Familiarity with Swift Concurrency (async/await), Combine, and modern iOS technologies
Experience with XCUITest and iOS performance profiling tools
Knowledge of App Store submission and deployment processes
Native Android Development
Working knowledge of Kotlin/Java, Android SDK, and Jetpack libraries
Familiarity with modern Android architectures (MVVM, MVP, Clean Architecture)
Familiarity with performance, memory management, multithreading, and concurrency on Android
Experience with Espresso and Android performance profiling tools
Knowledge of Play Store submission and deployment processes
Quality & Testing
Ensure strong testing practices: Jest/RNTL (unit), Detox/XCUITest/Espresso (E2E), and contract tests for the native/RN bridge
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across cross-platform, native bridge, iOS, and Android layers
Maintain high standards for code quality, reliability, and maintainability across all mobile platforms
Team Leadership & Mentoring
Mentor and guide React Native, iOS, and Android developers through code reviews, pairing, and technical coaching
Foster continuous improvement in engineering practices, tooling, and workflows
Collaborate closely with product, design, and delivery teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
Champion code reuse and shared component strategies across mobile and web while knowing when native implementations are the right choice
Product-Level Engineering Oversight
Participate actively in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, backlog refinement) to ensure overall engineering progress aligns with roadmaps and timelines
Maintain awareness of engineering health across all technology layers of the product — not just mobile
Identify cross-layer risks, dependencies, and blockers; escalate proactively
Know when to engage subject matter experts for other technology layers (services, web, AEM) and facilitate collaboration to resolve cross-cutting concerns
Ensure that mobile implementations integrate cleanly with native modules, APIs, backend services, and content platforms
Innovation & Continuous Learning
Stay current with React, React Native, iOS, Android, JavaScript/TypeScript, and mobile ecosystem trends
Evaluate emerging frameworks and methodologies (Kotlin Multiplatform, Flutter, Jetpack Compose, SwiftUI evolution, new React Native architecture)
Drive adoption of modern cross-platform and native mobile technologies and development patterns
Required Skills & Experience
10+ years of hands-on mobile development experience
2+ years in a lead or technical leadership role
Expert proficiency in React Native, React, Expo/EAS, JavaScript/TypeScript
Working knowledge of native iOS development (Swift, UIKit, SwiftUI, Objective-C, Swift Concurrency/Combine)
Working knowledge of native Android development (Kotlin/Java, Android SDK, Jetpack)
