I have a client who would like to have their website appearing near the top of the list on various search engines.

I personally have virtually no experience of this apart from the old meta tags on the index page so cannot help them any further.

Can anyone recommend someone who would be able to help with this who I would be able to put in touch with my client?

There's a fair amount of info here:
http://www.sitepoint.com/subcat/searchmarketing, but not sure about
local companies (if that's what your client is after!)

i met a guy called Mike Finn from this company:
http://www.theiteam.co.uk/ who specialise in that kind of thing. No
professional experience working with him though - seemed to know his onions!

Thanks for that info Stephen.

I would like to stick with local companies if possible. I'm sure there's
plenty of expertise in that area around here! Be nice to find someone from
dotdorset.

Maybe I'll try emailing Mike Finn as i-team seem to be based in Poole.

be aware of the extreme difficulties of appearing top for common
keywords and key phrases.

any SEO company that promises top placing will have to select the
keywords to optimise for - they may not be the ones the client wants
or the ones that his prospective customers use to find companies like
his.

There's a lot of common sense here:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291

It also makes sense for the client to decide if top placement will
bring a sensible ROI, or would the money spent on SEO/SEM and PPC be
better invested in real world promotion.

Top results are great, but if your client is in a crowded market, then
they will be very costly to attain.

and finally, beware any SEO company that offers top placement without
any work by the client.

Our very own Adam Mills (adam....@verseo.co.uk) does SEO. I do SEO
as part of larger projects too (but I'm fully booked for a bit now).

That can - depending on what they want to appear at the top _for_ - be
rather tricky/impossible. In fact it's a common sign of dodgy-SEO
companies that they promise "top ten" results.

SEO "done right" forms part of the whole development/marketing process
for a site and fits in with copywriting, site design, PPC campaigns,
etc.

Well.. <cough> our lot do it :-) Feel free to get them to drop an e-
mail to in...@intunet.co.uk or gizza ring on 0800 180 4566.

I think Adam Mills <adam....@verseo.co.uk> does it too.

Cheers,

Adrian

It's probably easier if I pass a list of names and email addresses on and
get my client to make contact directly. I understand that this is a
difficult area but not sure that they appreciate just how tricky it can be.

Would you like me to pass your details on Tony?

Ah, so that's what Adam does! I'll ask them to contact him too.

I'm swamped at the moment, and I'm not yet local (we're planning a
move to Bournemouth sometime soon and I'd joined dotdorset with that
in mind[1] and currently flit between Sheffield (home office) and
relations in Swanage - 'working' from their dining table) so probably
best not!

;o)

[1] of course that was before the current housing crisis!

Okay Tony.

Hope to see you down here sometime in the near future though.

Cheers Adrian. I'll pass your details on too.

That's probably enough for now.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

Hi Jon,
I offer bespoke Search Engine Marketing to companies if this is of any help?

Many companies seem to get pulled into off-the-peg SEO services - mostly just AdWords with a middleman - and end up tied into a monthly ourlay trying to hit the same common phrases as everyone else.

Personally I prefer to look at the business and offer a strategy that suits.

If you'd like to send more detail off-list please feel free.
