Hello Dotbikers,
Luis and Kunle (two awesome Somervillians) are bringing the concept of the Somerville Bike Kitchen to Dorchester this Spring. It’s an all-volunteer bicycle repair collective where members of the community can repair their own bikes, learn about bike repair and attend bike events.
The Dorchester Art Project (DAP, another awesome homegrown organization at 1490 Dot Ave in Fields Corner) is generously lending some of its space to the effort.
Tomorrow (Saturday) from 5 to 7 PM we will be having a soft start, setting up tools and workshop and start fixing a few bikes if time allows for it.
There is a large open space in the basement of DAP making it easy to socially distance. Once the operation is fully up and running, hopefully in a couple of weeks, we intend to bring the bike repair outdoors on some weekday evening.
We will focus mostly on basic repairs (brakes, flats tires, tune ups) and refer people to our local bike shops for repairs that involve more parts and skills.
The success on the initiative will depend largely on the dedication of the volunteers willing to keep it running on a regular basis. If you are interested in bike repair -with or without experience- you are welcome to show up tomorrow evening and help us get started!
