Question about the .app TLD

I've got an open question, I guess to Matt and the others behind the
original proposal for the .app TLD.

I'm curious if you can tell me the objective of the .app TLD? Is it
intended to help developers, consumers, or both?

I may be misunderstanding what has been in the press, but It's unclear
how either group benefits from the .app TLD, especially given that
most consumers don't discover apps (for iOS especially, but WP7 as
well, and to a degree Android as well) using web sites, they do so
using the tools provided in their mobile OS (or a desktop tether of
it). Can you explain, perhaps using a use case, how you see .app
improving the lives of developers, consumers, or both?
