I love me some medieval English history and anything to do with Richard III, so when I found out that Philippa Gregory's novels about The Wars of the Roses were being turned into a TV series, I was beyond psyched and planning to do a weekly recap here on the blog, à la Game of Thrones. After very recently DNF-ing

I understand there are quite a number of important characters to introduce, but I thought Margaret Beaufort's entrance was a little awkward. It looked like she just happened to be milling about when Jacquetta passed by. Now I can't wait to see how Margaret of Anjou, queen to Henry VI and despised by the Yorkists, makes her first appearance. It'd be great if she stormed into the palace dining hall and literally flipped a table while demanding her fancy chair back from Elizabeth.

To my surprise I actually enjoyed the series. There were, of course, liberties, but I found most to have some anchor in reality or long-standing rumours, like Jaquettas and Elizabeth being witches or one of the princes being switched. I can see the inclusion of such things as it makes for a good story. Much better handled than The Tudos in that department! I also liked that most of the carachters were allowed to have both good and bad sides to them.

The White Queen was the first Starz Original series to attract more women than men viewers with women making up 55 percent of the viewership. It received an Emmy nomination for best miniseries and Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Movie or Miniseries, best lead actress, Rebecca Ferguson, and best supporting actress, Janet McTeer.

Fans of The White Queen have something to look forward to in The White Princess, the spin-off or sequel series that premieres April 16. How does The White Princess connect to The White Queen? In an interview with Bustle, White Princess show runner, executive producer, and writer Emma Frost, who also worked on The White Queen, as well as stars Jodie Comer and Jacob Collins-Levy explained the similarities and differences between the new shows.

While both Starz series are adapted from Phillipa Gregory's novel series and have similar characters including the Dowager Queen as well as Elizabeth and Cecily of York, who appeared towards the end of The White Queen, there is a new cast and the series takes place later.

In preparation for The White Princess, which premieres April 16th on Starz, I thought I would repost my blog about its prequel The White Queen, which was originally posted at Aye, Tortuga!. I updated a few sections, otherwise, these were my first thoughts about the series.

All ten episodes of The White Queen are on the Starz website and OnDemand, so you definitely have time to catch up before tuning into The White Princess. The sequel picks up with King Henry VII (Henry Tudor) being forced to marry Elizabeth of York (daughter of King Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth), in order to bridge the divide between the Yorks and Lancasters. It stars Jodie Comer, Jacob Collins-Levy, Essie Davis, and Michelle Fairley. If you are a fan of the drama of the British monarchy, and enjoyed any of the movies listed above, then I definitely recommend you check out both of these series.
