‘Dorset’s voluntary sector on a knife edge – charting our way to a sustainable future’
If you are concerned about the future for your organisation and want to find out more about the local impact of national policy changes locally, and participate in workshops to help shape how we will work with the statutory sector in Dorset, you will not want
to miss ‘Dorset’s voluntary sector on a knife edge – charting our way to a sustainable future’ conference, organised by DCA, Dorset Communities Forum and Dorset County Council.
Attendees will have the chance to hear from speakers on ‘Where government policies are going over the next 5 years and the impact on local authorities and voluntary sector’, ‘The state of Dorset – the challenges the voluntary sector faces locally’ and ‘Unitaries,
devolution and DCC’s Corporate Plan’.
The conference will be held on Thursday 10th December at Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester, Dorset DT2 8PY. Doors will open from
10.00 am for registration for a 10.15am start. Please register your attendance online by going to

The Community Learning & Resource Centre in Wimborne has planned an event to help local residents save at least £200 a year off of their energy bills.
-
Perhaps you don’t have internet access?
-
Maybe you would like to change supplier but aren’t sure how to? Are you one of the many people struggling to pay your energy bills?
On 3rd December, Dorset Community Action, will hold a workshop and advice surgery to help people save money on their energy bills. This free event, part of
the Big Energy Saving Network, will run from 10.30 with a short presentation and time afterwards for one to one advice and help with switching to cheaper energy suppliers.
The session is designed to help local people take action and save money by switching tariff, energy supplier or the way they pay. For further information contact: CLaRC Tel. 01202 847600
On
the 1st October the British heart Foundation alongside the Department of Health launched a £1 million partnership to make public access defibrillators and CPR training more widely available in communities. CLaRC are delighted to have been informed
that their recent application for a defibrillator has been successful. The application includes an outdoor cabinet so that the equipment will be available 24/7 to the whole community allowing greater access to this vital lifesaving piece of equipment. In addition
to the defibrillator CLaRC will also receive a ‘Call Push Rescue Training Kit’ which will include all the equipment and materials to be able to provide free short training sessions on CPR. Alison Cross, centre manager of CLARC says ‘ This is fantastic news
not only for CLARC but also for the people of Wimborne. Having publically accessible defibrillators could mean the difference between life and death. I’m so proud to be able to make another available to the community. I’m also excited about being able to offer
CPR training, this vital skill need not be as daunting as people think’ CLaRC hope to offer the free CPR training resources in the first instance to users of the centre, as well as then running additional sessions that anyone would be welcome to attend.
Applications are open until March 2016 and can be made online via the British Heart Foundation website

Before you do anything, check your governing document.
News story from the Charity Commission.

During Trustees’ Week, the Charity Commission highlights one of the main duties of trustees: keeping within your charity’s rules.
The governing document is the ‘rulebook’ for your charity. Depending on your charity’s structure, your governing document is likely to be one of these:
-
constitution
-
trust deed
-
articles of association
A well-written governing document will tell you many of the things you need to know about your charity, and will contain the answers to many frequently asked questions, such as:
-
what the charity exists to do (its purposes, as explained in its objects clause)
-
the kinds of activities that it can undertake to further those purposes, what powers it has and any limits on them
-
who the trustees are, how many trustees there should be and how they are appointed and removed
-
how to call meetings and what notice periods to give to call an annual or special general meeting (AGM or SGM)
-
how to change the governing document, and which rules can be changed
-
whether the charity has members and, if so, who can be a member and what their rights and responsibilities are
-
how to close the charity down
People often contact the commission with questions such as these. But their governing document contained the answer all along. Sometimes the commission can only find out the answers
by reading your governing document. So it makes sense to look at it yourself first.
Improve health and well-being through learning. Bournemouth CVS and Poole

Motivational interviewing (a 5 hour course) - £28 per learner.
Wednesday 16th December 2015 – 9.30-2.30

activities in their lives. Learners will find out more about how the Five Ways actions and how they can be incorporated in organisational strategies and daily work practice. In addition to the workshop learners will also be able to access follow up surgeries
on this topic, to assist them to adapt the practice they have learnt to the specific needs of their organisations.
An introduction to Mental Health (a 5 hour course) - £21 per learner
Monday 7th December 2015 – 9.30-2.30
This will help learners to describe common types of mental health conditions and to identify some of the factors that could contribute to mental health problems. Learners will explore ways to safely support someone who is experiencing a mental health difficulty.
To enquire about or to book a place on any of these courses, you can ring 01769 575157 or email
ndht...@nhs.net
