Subject: Dementia in a Landscape: Stepping into Nature a Dorset AONB Project

Hi Sue,

I hope all is well with you, I have now designed a questionnaire on survey monkey for the Stepping into Nature project aimed at providers of activities and how they use the natural landscape, would you be able to ping this out to anyone you know plus to the group of green providers you kindly sent the details over for.

I understand if some people may get this twice so have covered that at the bottom of the email.

Hello,

Stepping into Nature is being developed to enable people living with dementia, their carers both family and professional, connect with the natural & cultural landscape in a sociable and creative way.

Evidence supports the theory that using the natural outdoor environment improves mental and physical health and wellbeing, contributing to quality of life and the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is exploring how older people and those living with dementia enjoy, access and join in with the natural and cultural landscape around them.

We are investigating what current natural & cultural landscape focused activities are available in Dorset and we need your help by telling us how you currently use the natural & cultural landscape to deliver your activities or if you would like to use the natural landscape but are just not sure how to start.

Interested??  Then please take 5 minutes to take part in our survey  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P9D5XVM

People living with Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is increasing and currently is directly affecting around 800,00 people with an additional 670,00 carers, in Dorset alone there are more than 13,000 living with the disease, many left lonely and stigmatised. This figure is estimated to rise and even double in the next 30 years and according to Alzheimer’s UK is currently costing the health service and local government £23 billion and rising.

The landscape of the Dorset AONB provides a mosaic of natural & cultural environments for those that live, work and visit here, from the benefits of fresh food and clean water to those that are harder to define such as mental health benefits from contact with this natural environment.

The ideal would be to create a landscape where all people are equally able to access the Dorset AONB in a sustainable way, enjoying the recreational and lifelong learning opportunities it has to offer and benefits to wellbeing and high quality local products that a sensitively farmed  and managed landscape can provide.

Thank you for your time

Many Thanks

Julie

This email may reach you more than once so please accept my apologise if this is the case, but please feel free to pass this email onto other providers or groups that deliver activities in the natural landscape and you think would like to take part.
