The Gold 300 has been engineered to deliver a true audiophile experience. Premium driver technology taken from our flagship Platinum II speakers has been melded with class-leading cabinet construction to produce a speaker designed to last a lifetime.
Besides of the price difference (and the technical differences such as frequency range, Gold starting from 30 Hz and going up to 'only' 50 kHz versus Platinum from 35 Hz to 100 kHz), somebody heard them side by side?
I previously owned the silver 300 6g for about 3-4 years (only traded in last week). I have had an audition in a listening room for about a couple of hours on the gold 300 5G back in August. I thought they sounded very similar to my silver 300 but simply up a notch in sound quality especially in the mids and highs.
A deal came up for a pair of PL200ii and I made the deposit on them without ever auditioning them. They are still in transit (hopefully will have them next week). Will definitely share my impressions on the pl200ii in comparison with my memories on the gold 300 5G
I am super excited as well (sleepless nights lol). Confirmed delivery on Thursday afternoon. Both the speakers and the power amp are brand new so will probably need some time to burn in if you believe in such a thing.
For power amp, I used to have the Roksan K3 power amp which is designed to work with monitor audio speakers. 140wpc @8ohm, 220wpc @4ohm. Just figure the PL200ii would benefit from a more powerful amp.
As for break-in, my experience suggests this is at least a few weeks, 24/7. Before that, literally every recording sounded the "same." Literally. Madonna, Mozart, Metallica - all as if they came from the same recording space. Insane, and heartbreaking. We went away on holiday for a week and I left my system on the whole time, remoting into my music server to change genres of playlists so there was sonic variety, plus pink noise. We returned and...bliss, just awesome sonic bliss. Monitors are so under-rated and such outstanding values for the money.
Yes, I have pulled them out 5ft from the front wall (manual actually recommended 18 - 24 inches only), 3ft from the side wall, distance between speakers 7ft and distance between speaker to listening position 7ft.
I have my Monitors out further than they recommend as well, but I also found they were a bit trickier to set up compared to my previous PSB speakers because I have some unusual bass issues with my config. You've got it easy! lol
So I managed to listen to a few vocal jazz tracks late last night. Again, the amplifier and the speakers are brand new so I plan not to provide initial impressions until I let the system play for a few nights.
Did you notice much difference between the distance to the back wall talking about the Platinums 200 or the Gold 300 (in other words are the Platinums or Golds less sensitive for placing against the back wall)??
Back in the early 1980s, I knew a neighbor teen who had a pair of British loudspeakers. This was significant because, first, they were speakers actually made by a speaker company (mine were by Electrohome), and second, bands like Duran Duran and Def Leppard were huge, so things British were cool. Very cool. I had to see and hear these speakers. Happily for me, their owner was glad to show them off.
My private audience with British audio royalty was a pivotal moment in my audio life. There they stood, on actual speaker stands: Monitor Audio MA7s -- with removable grilles! As far as I knew, these were the pinnacle of loudspeaker technology. Even before my friend played a note of music, I knew I had to have them.
Monitor says that, all together, those drivers and their solid cabinet can reproduce frequencies from 35Hz to 60kHz. Also claimed are a sensitivity of 89dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. Monitor recommends amplification of 100-150Wpc, but my 85Wpc (into 8 ohms) Simaudio Moon i5.3 integrated seemed to have no difficulties.
BTW, My tastes are a bit cold and crisp crystal clear sound for high with huge details, bass not need to be as deep as it could. vocal should be crystal clear, Monitor Audio is my choice for long time with first buy of Silver RX 2, then move on RX 6 , RX8 then now want to up level to Gold series. Platium is out of reach.
MA is always my taste of music, not just for their build but the SQ as well.
but the flagship is almost out of hand of most people, rare people pick the MA flagship while they have so many choices at that money level
Is your power known to fluctuate or to have a lot of noise? Do you know any audiophiles or engineers in your town / neighborhood who can shed some light on this issue? Is power an urgent issue or can it wait? Speakers would probably outlast any equipment that you have, so selecting the ones to meet your need and match taste is quite a significant decision.
I definitely did notice a difference. My surge protector was tripping a few times a day. So, usability and gear safety was at risk. After acquiring the P15, I learnt that my voltage goes up to 239 and drops down to 224V. Otherwise, my distortion is quite low between 0.4 and 0.8%
My justification for the P15 as opposed to P12, was that need additional plugs for all my stuff. Also, I wanted to be ready in case I demanding power amp.
your should need to re-cable for the network as well, do them at same time, you gonna need the CAT 7 with not very much different in price compare to CAT6 but will help much with data communication with less jitter than 6A and CAT6, even you use wifi, a full mesh network and use the wire uplink everywhere in the house for the best performance
I found Ubuquiti mesh access points and their POE switch is the best in price and quality over others brand, forget Cisco -franchise product like Linksys or low cost product of cisco,
this mesh wifi access point i would suggest to use if you want wifi streaming for audio
When i buy the house ( a flat with 3 bed rooms) i almost take off everything out of the house ,just keep the walls , ceilling, floor only, start re-cabling with CAT 7 and single mode optical cable inside the house, every room there is also ethernet and optic fiber cable together, on ceiling as well, the last step is interior finish.
BTW, foget the long-range with huge wifi signal router/repeater booster, the one for all , or thousand square feets coverage one. Just divide the space with number of mesh points, then combine them together with seamlessly roaming, many disvantages of old generation have been resolved with mesh point system in term of bandwidth and jitter issue
I really need help in deciding which one to get. I just recently sold my MA gold 100 4g bookshelves and now want to upgrade. The 3 I'm looking at are the kef r3s the ultra towers and the MA gold 100 5g.
Thanks for your input. My room is about 10 ft x 11ft. So it's not large and I wouldn't say it's tiny, it's still a bedroom though. What got me on the r3s was the size and the bass, I like big bookshelves. At the same time I have 3x 15 inch psa subs in my room, I love bass. I have the ls50s but I find their a bit bright, whereas the MA are warmer and they look so nice. I know it feels like I'm answering my own question , and the truth is I went yesterday to put a deposit on the MA GOLDS. This is primarly for movie watching and a little music. My set is 2 channel, I have rears but I find 2 channel bass sounds so much better. Since I have all the bass I need, it wouldn't matter if the bookshelf had heaps of bass or not. What did you think?
The Gold series are very tonally refined and balanced and will work with most quality amplifiers, however they do like a bit of current to show their very best and at some frequencies in the lower midrange and bass they can dip below four ohms. I had a Musical Fidelity M5si with my Silver 500's and that worked superbly. It does depend on your budget but if you can go to around $3K for the M5si, you will have a match made in audio heaven.

To complement this pristine signal chain, we've worked with Jensen Transformers to create a 500 series sized version of their classic JT-16 input transformer. This transformer has set the bar for clarity and performance. To complete the chain we've used the equally impressive Jensen JT-11 output.
This is one of the highest quality clean and open pres available. Unlike the cheap transformerless pres that come with many common audio interfaces, Gold does not sound dull. It enables the kind of clarity and detail you'll only find with components of this caliber. It's the perfect pre for recording acoustic instruments and anything you'd like to remain true to the source.
