Hi all!

That project I’ve been talking about since, like, a million years?
It’s got a crowdfunding page now! We haven’t announced the price yet
but there’s pictures of the new board, all the specs, and you can
sign up to be notified when the starting gun is fired.

BTW I wanna say that so far I’m really happy to have finally chosen
CrowdSupply for a crowdfunding partner. Many of you have asked me
“why are you using Kickstarter?” and for a long time I just assumed
that I had to open-source my firmware if I used Crowd Supply, and
I had various anxieties and reservations about that.

It wasn’t until I went to that awesome Hardware Hacker’s Happy Hour
(which was secretly a Crowd Supply recruiting event, I now realize)
and talked with some of the CS folks that I realized I could open
source the hardware but hang onto the firmware, or at least the
secret-sauce part of it that I’ve been developing for 2 years.

Everybody at CS has been really great, and they’re adding all of
the project management that I suck at, so I couldn’t be happier
with it all. (It definitely marries me to Mouser for a supplier,
which is okay I guess? I don’t really have a preference but I’ve
always defaulted to Digikey for some reason. But I’ll get a
little bit of a price break on parts & also they will actually
buy & distribute half my boards if the campaign succeeds with the other half,
which seems like a huge help.)

I know some of you have done crowdfunding before. Any tips for noobs?

Congrats!

While kickstarter might have more exposure to a non-engineering audience, crowdsupply is awesome at delivering things before the eyes of just the right audience. The mouser connection - both for sourcing parts at a discount and distributing them after-sales - has been worthwhile, and isn't exclusive once the campaign is complete.
The project management is definitely a plus over the kickstarter you're-all-on-your-own method.

My biggest recommendation for running your campaign is to seed out demo units to people before the campaign starts, so that while the campaign is running, they can post reviews. plus - if they have any problems with the device, you can get in front of it and have answers before the campaign closes. I didn't do this for Tigard (https://www.crowdsupply.com/securinghw/tigard) due to time constraints, but would in the future.

Feel free to bug me on or off list if you have any more questions.
