as you know today at 5pm is the deadline for this weeks group order.

there is, however, an additional vendor this week: stan rubenstein
associates: http://store.sra-solder.com/

there is some cheap solder paste that some of you may be interested in:

http://store.sra-solder.com/product.php?xProd=6067

if you are interested in this include it in your orders this afternoon.

If you are like me and pay attention to art and robotics you have probably been hearing a lot about the Arduino micro-controller platform and all of the cool things that people are doing with it. In some circles this platform has almost developed a cult like following.

Well this sunday you can build your own.

DorkbotPDX has put together a cost effective arduino kit ($6) and an equally inexpensive programmer ($9) and this sunday from 5-8PM  at PNCA (1240 NW Johnson -- Room 205 ) we will help you put yours together.

The cost of the seminar is $15 and is limited to the quantities we have on hand (25-30) so if you want to make sure that you get a spot you can prepay for your kit (paypal this address) or email me to RSVP.

You will need to bring a laptop, a usb cable, a soldering iron (10-20 watt pencil type) and a pair of dikes (wire cutters).

See you there.

Don.

First of all I was really happy that so many people showed up and got
as far into their construction as they did.

27 people and only 1 dead board.

Now I know that getting all of that done in under 3 hours was a little
ambitious. (The pacing was initially based on the photo session at http://www.flickr.com/photos/7175086@N05/sets/72157604783725339/
which took 20 minutes from start to finish)

For those of you who were unable to finish the cable, Jacob Helwig has
provided a clear picture of a working cable at

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jacob_helwig/2485841122/in/set-72157605009944742

<img src=http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2386/2485841122_d52df893c4.jpg?v=0
>

He also provided this pinout sumary .

Pins -> USB
1 -> 2 (Rx)
2 -> 1 (Tx)
3 -> 7 (+5V)
4 -> 4 (Reset)
5 -> 3 (Ground)

Pin 1 is on the bottom (the side of the programmer with the leds --
red wire in jacob's picture) on both ends.

I am looking to have a second session for software as soon as I can
get a room scheduled (this sunday or some sunday soon). In the mean
time you can download the software (http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
) and poke around at the main site (http://www.arduino.cc/). I will
also be at the bi-weekly dorkbot meeting at the Lucky Lab NW tomorrow
between 7 and 10 and will bring a soldering iron if anyone gets stuck
or wants to finish up their.

You can also email me if you need anything.

Count mine as up and running! once I reversed the wiring on the programmer cable. (I didn't notice the red wire on mine was opposite of the example I was looking at)

but now I have a little LED blinking happily away, I've made it blink slow, I've made it blink fast...

now to make it into something useful, or at least more entertaining that a blinking LED (as the wife put it "is that what it is suppose to do?")

Thanks, it was fun, looking forward to part 2.

Dan.

Don,
I'm interested in a future workshop starting from the beginning if you are planning to do it again. I'd really like to make up a few of the low lost arduinos. Let me know if you are going to do another hardware workshop. If not, who would I talk to about buying the components?

Thanks,
Scott

actually now that I have a working setup, I'd be interested in at least a couple more rbb kits...

Dan and Scott:

we have still have ~13 rbbb kits left as well as a ~20 ATMEGA168's with
the Arduino bootloader on them already. RBBB kits are $8 and the 168's are
$5. if you (or anyone else on the list) are interested. drop me an
off-list email and i can get you squared away. I also have the kits at the
regular meetings.

I will bring some to the second section on sunday, and they are generally brought to the biweekly meetings.

good! I haven't been able to make it to the regular meetings due to a monday night conflict, but that may be going away. I'll take a couple of the kits if possible. I've got no real plans for them at the moment, so if someone else does then they should get first dibs.

Thanks.

Do you have any of the USB to TTL programming boards?

The Workshop pretty much cleaned me out (I scrambled together 7 of them sunday morning or I would have had to start turning people away)

I have one or two and a few that may be repairable.

I will be reordering the ftdi chips and I should probably finalize the design for the bare bones Atmel based programmer and start building those out.
