The car is not idling. The crystal bud vases fastened to the door frame inside are not waiting for roses. There is no chauffeur (thus, no cigarette dangling from his lips), and he is not leaning on the fender with his arms crossed and hat pulled low.
Instead, the elegant automobile is meant to stand for something. It is there to tell the arriving guest that the liveried doorman is not lost, that he is not a refugee from a European capital or the more cosmopolitan climes of this country New York, San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans.
A person will look intently at an interesting car, as if the quarter panel or console will divulge the identity of its interesting owner, as if by looking hard enough the looker assures himself the car and things like it will be his in time.
No such assurance is forthcoming from the Rolls, but it does respond. It tries to whisper, but ends up shouting in the irritated idiom of Dear Abby, "He is where he's supposed to be, bub," the implication being you are not.
Trusthouse Forte, the London-based catering and hotel management firm opened the doors of the Excelsior Dec. 28. It employs about 325 people in competing with the Williams Plaza for the luxury hotel trade in downtown Tulsa, said general manager Roger Terrell.
The Trusthouse Forte group operates, among other international properties, the Grosvenor House in London and is just breaking into the American market. It operates the Plaza of the Americas in Dallas and plans to open the Little Rock Excelsior in the Arkansas capital soon, Terrell said.
The "most evident" feature pointing to first-class accommodations at the Tulsa Excelsior, Terrell said, is the hotel's Waterford's Restaurant, "a gourmet dining room with international cuisine. It's gone over quite well."
The hotel's two large suites ("strictly designer suites all the way") cost $425 per day. For his cash, the customer gets a parlor four times the size of a standard Excelsior room, two bedrooms 2 1/2 times the size of standard bedrooms, various seating arrangements, a Jacuzzi, a wet bar (with full-size refrigerator), a 50-inch screen television and an assortment of expensive soap, shampoo and other personal items.
This wonderful hotel is one of the more recent additions to downtown Tegucigalpa's hotel scene, but the Excelsior is located close to the neighborhood's border with Colonia Palmira, and it's got a very strong Palmira vibe. The Excelsior is a business-class hotel, but thanks to exceptionally friendly staff it seems a tad less formal than the other hotels around town in this category. Comfy rooms, orthopedic mattresses, hypoallergenic sheets and plush duvets add to the little touches here.
