COMSOL is a very expensive package to license, and there are only a few researchers who need to use it. We have two licenses for COMSOL version 6.0; these are for the base COMSOL only. We will review usage on an annual basis, and, if usage is deemed sufficient, we will continue to renew on a year to year basis. If a research group needs an additional module, then we offer the following cost-sharing plan.

Once a lab has purchased a license for a module, ARC will install the licenses and begin monitoring usage. COMSOL licenses expire June 30, and we will review usage at the beginning of June for those that do not fall under automatic eligibility.

Licenses (base package as well as modules) are shared amongst all users of the cluster. Any group that requires ongoing use of COMSOL that simultaneously occupies all available licenses for the base COMSOL Multiphysics and results in long wait times for other users will be asked to either reduce usage or purchase license(s) for additional seats commensurate with their needs. If additional seats of the base COMSOL package become necessary, ARC will cost-share with the research group, in the same manner as we do for modules, for up to two additional seats. If a lab must purchase licenses for more than two new seats, they will be responsible for both the initial purchase price as well as ongoing subscription costs for those supplemental seats, for as long as they have need.

Because we only have limited quantities of COMSOL licenses and they are a shared resource, we must use license tracking via Slurm so that you can be sure that a license will be available for you when your batch job starts. Therefore, you must request licenses in your Slurm job script. This is done with the --licenses option. Previously, it was only necessary to request a license for the COMSOL base module (comsol@slurmdb:1). However, since we have fewer licenses for some modules (1) than we have seats for the base COMSOL package (2), we have begun also requiring that users request a license as part of their Slurm job script for required modules as well. If there is only a single license for a module, as indicated in Table 1 above, please use the license specification shown when requesting resources for a Slurm job. For example, to request a license for the COMSOL base package as well as one license for the Structural Mechanics module, please include the following in your job script:

Please remember to use these license commands within all of your COMSOL jobs. Though your job may start without the license specifications, it will not guarantee that a license will be available for all needed modules. And if licenses for those modules are available for you, the users who follow you will depend on you to accurately reserve those licenses in Slurm so that their jobs will be properly held until a license is available for all of the modules that they need.

YCRC has COMSOL Multiphysics 5.2a available on Grace. It can be used to run basic physical and multiphysics models on one node utilizing multiple cores. If you need to run run models across multiple nodes or need to run COMSOL on your local machine, please contact us.

Comsol can be run without the graphical interface assuming you have a model file and a study defined beforehand. This is particularly useful for parametric sweeps or scanning over a range of values for specific parameters. For example:

comsol batch -inputfile mymodel.mph -outputfile out.mph -pname L -plist 8[cm],10[cm],12[cm]Which will run three versions of the model sequentially for each of the three values of L enumerated. When combined with Slurm Job Arrays many COMSOL jobs can be run in parallel. An example dSQ job-file would look like:

module load COMSOL; comsol batch -inputfile mymodel.mph -outputfile out_8.mph -pname L -plist 8[cm]module load COMSOL; comsol batch -inputfile mymodel.mph -outputfile out_10.mph -pname L -plist 10[cm]module load COMSOL; comsol batch -inputfile mymodel.mph -outputfile out_12.mph -pname L -plist 12[cm]Which would run three versions of the study using different values of L and save their outputs in separate files.Be careful to provide a different output file for each line to avoid clashes between the separate jobs.

Chemical Species Transport. Transport of Diluted Species in 1D, 2D, 3D models. Transport and reactions of the species dissolved in a gas, liquid, or solid can be handled with this interface. The driving forces for transport can be diffusion, convection when coupled to a flow field, and migration, when coupled to an electric field. Moisture Transport in 1D, 2D, 3D is used to model moisture transfer in a porous medium.

Heat Transfer in 1D, 2D, 3D models. HT in Solids and Fluids. HT in porous media including non-equilibrium transfer. Bioheat transfer. Surface to Surface Radiation. Joule Heating. HT in thin structures (2D, 3D) like shells, films, fractures. Conjugate HT from laminar and turbulent flows (2D, 3D). Heat and moisture transport. Thermoelastic effect.

General Mathematics equations in 1D, 2D, 3D models. Classic PDE. Coefficient based and general form PDE. Wave form PDE. Weak form PDE. Ordinary differential equations and algebraic equations. Deformed geometry and moving mesh. Curvilinear coordinates.

All above models can be used in the Multiphysics approach of coupling them together. They can be solved in Full Couple mode or by using Segregated Solver (solving one physical model and using resulting field to model another, and so on).

COMSOL is not backwards compatible. If you have a project file from a newer version of COMSOL (e.g. 5.3), it will not open in 5.2a. However, in some circumstances, we can assist with porting the project file back to version 5.2a. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

COMSOL Material Library consists of about 2500 different materials with their physical properties. Many of them are included with temperature dependancies. Without this library you have to specify material parameters manually, however, you can save your new material for future use. We can help in adding material form COMSOL library to your project file using a different license.

More advanced users often use MatLab for automation of COMSOL models and extracting results data for mining them by external methods available in MatLab. Unfortunately, you cannot do this with the license available on the cluster. Please contact us if you feel you need to utilize MatLab.

Lastly, our license does not allow to use COMSOL for solving models based on Maxwell Equations (RF, Wave Optics), semiconductor models, particle tracing, ray optics, non-linear mechanics, and some other more advanced modules. To approach such models in COMSOL on your local computer, please contact us to use our more general license with very limited number of licensed seats.
