Dear
Carolyn, This could be it. The Colombia Free Trade
Agreement (FTA) and other pending trade deals could come up for a
vote any day now unless our legislators really hear some
resistance. So please participate in a National
Call-in Day, TODAY, Monday, July 11.
Today, hundreds
of people are gathering in front of the White House in a
powerful demonstration calling for fair trade, not free trade. Using
strong words and moving visuals they are honoring the trade
unionists, community leaders and human rights defenders murdered in
recent years in Colombia because they stood up for rights that will
be further undermined if this FTA passes.
Will you back
them up today by echoing their message in a two-minute call to your
members of Congress? (If
you prefer, you can also take action online
here.)
Just follow this simple
three-step process to make your call:
Step 1—
Call the
Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to
be connected to your Member of Congress. If you don't know who
that is, just provide your address and the operator will
automatically connect you.
Step 2—
Once connected, ask
to speak to the aide that works on trade policy. Keep your
message simple. Just say, “My name is _____. I'm calling
to urge Representative ________ to take a stand for human and
labor rights today by opposing the
Colombia, Korea and Panama Free Trade Agreements.”
Need some
motivation? Watch
these videos that the U.S. Office on Colombia has
made of Colombians explaining in their own words why this trade
agreement will be so devastating for their lives.
And if you want
to brush up on your talking points, check out
our Colombia FTA resource page here.
If you believe
that human rights should NOT be sacrificed on the altar of free
trade, we need your help to make sure the Colombia FTA and other
pending trade deals do not pass! So please make your call and then
get everyone you know involved in sending a strong message to
Congress today. Thank you,
