At our first meeting on Saturday, Sept 25, Martha Koester reviewed the
threat to medicare and social security posed by the deficit reduction
commission. She explained the need to make sure that Medicare is not
sacrificed in the oddly one-sided campaign to defend Social Security.
See her points on our website dontcutourmedicare.org.

We talked about our targets - the lawmakers, the organized public, and
the vulnerable public. For outreach to each of these, we have
developed some tools that can be found at our website.

For the elected officials and candidates, there are two pledges. There
is a resolution which has been passed by King County Democrats and
there is a proposed letter addressed to city council members.

We must have organizational support. To draw in as many organizations
as possible, we have accumulated an extensive list of advocacy groups,
some members of which you are bound to know.

To look for people who know personally the value of safety net
programs for seniors, we have developed comprehensive lists of
retirement homes and senior centers. There are flyers to be copied and
handed out.

People at the meeting were convinced of the need to act and unsure of
their ability now to draw others away from electioneering activities.

Jean and Larry Green from Kent told of the successful national effort
in 1989 to repeal a surcharge levied on Medicare recipients. Larry
said the most influential thing they did was to organize a massive
rally which filled Westlake Park.

In 1965, to get Medicare passed, seniors crisscrossed the country in
buses, rallying for health care without impoverishment.

Whatever your preference, be it making contacts, organizing speakers,
doing research, writing letters to the editor, visiting legislators,
giving presentations in senior centers and churches, handing out
leaflets, holding a banner...

We need you!

Our next meeting is
