The 1997 Berserk anime series is based on the manga series of the same name by Kentaro Miura. The episodes are directed by Naohito Takahashi and animated by Oriental Light and Magic. The first thirteen volumes of the manga are covered.[1][2] The series' twenty-five episodes aired between October 8, 1997 and April 1, 1998 in Japan on Nippon TV.[3][a]

The series focuses on the life of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior who calls himself "The Black Swordsman", as he looks upon his days serving as a member of a group of mercenaries, the Band of the Hawk. Led by an ambitious, ruthless, yet intelligent and graceful man named Griffith, together they battle their way into the royal court, and are forced into a fate that may change their entire lives. Each episode uses two pieces of theme music, one opening theme and one ending theme. The opening theme is "Tell Me Why" by Penpals. The ending theme is "Waiting So Long" by Silver Fins.

Berserk doesn't have any official anime adaptations confirmed as of the writing of this video, so fan animators have taken matters into their own hands. The fan studio ARCHE has decided to continue where the 1997 anime series left off and imagine what Guts' journey might have looked like had it been renewed for a second season. Those thinking that the recently released pilot episode was the only entry in this fan project might be surprised to learn that the studio is committing to more installments in the near future.

The first Berserk anime adaptation ended on quite a dark note, as Guts and Casca were left shattered thanks to the events of the Eclipse. While the 1997 series began by showing the Black Swordsman following Griffith's betrayal, viewers were left hanging as it would be decades before Berserk would return with a new anime television series. Following the tragic passing of creator Kentaro Miura, the manga has continued thanks to the artist's friends who want to complete Berserk to honor their deceased colleague. Should an official Berserk anime adaptation be announced, there are more than a few stories from the manga that have yet to be brought to the small screen.

In a new "Question And Answer" session on YouTube, Studio ARCHE confirmed that they are working on new episodes of the unofficial second season of Berserk. At present, the fan studio will aim to release a new episode every three to four months, since that is how long it took for the pilot episode to be created.

This fan-made series, should it continue to follow the original manga, will cover many of the events that took place in the 2016 Berserk anime adaptation. While the CG-animated series did get two seasons, many anime fans felt that it was unable to live up to the art of Kentaro Miura. Berserk would return most recently thanks to the Berserk Memorial Edition series, but this anime adaptation took footage from the three films that told the story of the Golden Age Arc.

Warning: Spoilers for Berserk: The Golden Age - Memorial Edition episode 9A new Berserk series that adapts Studio 4C's Golden Age film trilogy actually just topped the original anime by including one controversial scene from the manga that had never received an adaptation before.

Until now, it was unlikely that the ongoing Berserk: The Golden Age - Memorial Edition could top the original 1997 anime in any way. Even though the Memorial Edition had already added never-before-seen footage, they either appeared in the original anime and paled in comparison, like Berserk's bonfire of dreams scene, or were wholly proprietary to Studio 4C's rendition and were actually detrimental to the original story.

But episode nine of the Memorial Edition called "Wounds" contains a critical scene from the manga that even the original 1997 anime skipped. The moment takes place when Guts and Casca consummate their relationship. Unfortunately, Guts is haunted by a memory of when he was assaulted as a boy, causing him to lash out violently against Berserk's heroine, Casca. Although he later divulges what happened to him, Guts is so disgusted by his reaction that he distances himself from Casca. But Casca accepts him, wounds and all, and embraces the haunted warrior.

The fact that the title of the episode already shares the name of the manga chapter that the Memorial Edition adapted was a positive sign. But the scene is truly a faithful recreation of the manga. It's understandable why the original 1997 anime skipped the scene. The show was already controversial for the gratuitous violence that it incorporated. But for viewers to truly comprehend the nuances of Guts and Casca's relationship, it was crucial for the original anime and Studio 4C's movie trilogy to capture the full moment as mangaka Kentaro Miura intended it to be.

Unfortunately, only manga readers knew just how deep Guts and Casca's bond truly was. So only they could appreciate the full extent of Guts' rage when Griffith betrayed them and the utter helplessness Guts felt when Casca lost her mind. Even without this scene, fans can still recognize how important Casca is to Guts and understand how Guts is affected by everything that happens to her. But what the Memorial Edition captures is that Casca truly accepts all of Guts - his horrific past that will haunt him for the rest of his life and even the fact that he attacked her when she was at her most vulnerable, even after she gave herself freely to him in a manner that she had never done before while trusting him complicity that he would keep her safe. Guts had never been so low as he was in that moment, and yet, she's okay with it and is willing to share those wounds with him. All of this had been lost to non-manga readers until now. Moreover, Guts willing to separate himself from her and take accountability for his actions is also incredibly powerful, showing just how much he respects and loves her.

Right from the horrified look on Guts' face upon realizing what he'd done to Casca licking the wound she inflicted on Guts, the Memorial Edition achieved something no one expected. It made up for the egregious use of CGI and the many other unwise creative choices that were made during the course of Studio 4C's two Berserk projects - which goes to show the overall importance and power of Guts and Casca's love in Miura's masterpiece.

Kentaro Miura's Berserk takes place in a fantasy world resembling medieval Europe, albeit with a lot more supernatural entities and dark magic. The story centers on Guts, a figure also known as the Black Swordsman and one of the strongest men in the world. Cursed by ghosts and demons and haunted by his traumatic past, Guts is currently seeking vengeance against his former friend, Griffith.

Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on January 23, 2024: Berserk is more than ever revered as a classic, if brutal, fantasy anime and manga series. The anime adaptations of Kentaro Miura's manga creation have mostly been well-received, though they also have their fair share of controversy. Nevertheless, the Berserk anime each exist to get new fans into the franchise, so it's important for them to know the correct order to watch them in. Said order includes the Berserk movies, with the Berserk anime released before and afterward being "chronologically" related adaptations.

With director Naohito Takahashi at the helm, the first animated version of this Seinen series was produced by Oriental Light and Magic. This Berserk anime adaptation follows the manga's Black Swordsman and Golden Age arcs, showcasing Guts' burgeoning relationship with the Band of the Hawk. Several manga characters were entirely excised, like Puck and Donovan.

However, cutting out the Skull Knight resulted in an infamous plot hole, since it fails to explain how Guts and Casca escape Femto after the Eclipse. The original manga's overt violence and mature tone were drastically watered down for the anime, although the show inevitably ended on a mournful note. Further, removing some of the manga's gags helped make the anime narrative more solemn. For the longest time, it's been something of a "lost adaptation" due to its lack of availability on streaming platforms. Thankfully, Discotek is re-releasing the 1997 Berserk anime on Blu-ray in 2024.

A film series of Berserk movies was first announced as early as 2010, when it was mentioned on the jacket cover of Volume 35. Animated by Studio 4C, this Berserk trilogy is officially subtitled The Golden Age Arc. The title of the first movie relates to Griffith's Crimson Beherit, the mystical object that would later cause irreparable damage to the world.

Guts meets Griffith for the first time in The Egg of the King, where he eventually befriends the Band's leader after suffering a humiliating defeat. Nosferatu Zodd tells Guts to stay away from Griffith, referring to his Beherit. The Egg of the King ends with Guts mindlessly obeying Griffith's orders, only to overhear the latter criticize every member of his supposedly beloved Band.

The Battle for Doldrey covers some of the most intense fight sequences from the original Berserk anime TV series. Dejected, the proficient swordsman Guts promises to exit the Band of the Hawk in order to seek his own path, and therefore earn Griffith's friendship on equal terms. The Band successfully infiltrates the Fortress of Doldrey using a pincer attack. Casca defeats and kills the malicious General of the Blue Whale knights, Adon Coborlwitz.

Griffith's victory puts an end to the Hundred-Year War, but Guts' unexpected decision to leave breaks his heart. Griffith recklessly ends up sleeping with Princess Charlotte, for which he's arrested and incarcerated in the ominous Tower of Rebirth. Although The Battle of Doldrey is a significant turning point in the Berserk storyline, this film installment doesn't pack the same potent punch as its successor.
