Hello,
Our American friends celebrate the 4th of July as America’s Independence from England. For Buddhists, Milarepa Center in the US suggests we celebrate it as Interdependence Day! As His Holiness the Dalai Lama said, “Instead of focusing on secondary differences between us, we need to think of how we are interdependent and that all human beings belong to one big family.” This past year has clearly shown how interdependent we actually are so maybe take a moment to meditate on our global interconnectedness.
The Mind & Life Institute will honor the Dalai Lama’s birthday with the release of a short 36-minute documentary titled “Evolution of the Heart.” The film chronicles conversations between His Holiness, evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson, and social scientist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela. Can we consciously evolve to be kinder and more compassionate? How do we reconcile the needs of the individual with those of society? The film will be available - for free - on Mind & Life’s Website beginning July 6.
https://www.mindandlife.org/ And just a reminder, Wednesday, July 14 is one of the four auspicious days, Chokhor Duchen, and International Sangha Day. Chokhor Duchen commemorates the anniversary of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s first teaching. Let’s read the Sanghata Sutra that day!
Monday night Japan time I’ll send out chapter assignments for the Golden Light Sutra that we’ll read on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday on Tuesday, July 6.
Keep well!
