Technophobia seems to be the biggest reason as to why small businesses
have to have someone that works on their websites and think they are
forced to use someone that supposedly knows what they are doing. But
once again, that is an ancient thought process as well. The reality of
the situation is that with the advances in content management systems
and other software updating your own website is as simple as writing
and email. Yes, this means that you are paying your guy to copy and
paste your email and send you bill for that.
Just being able to update your website yourself is a great step
forward, but you need a little bit more than that if you are going to
see business from the internet. You have to be aware of all elements
related to your website and how to utilize it as a marketing tool.
There are thousands upon thousands of website out there that look
great, but yet they are not generating any business because all basic
elements of a successful website are missing.
So what can you do as a small business owner trying to compete on the
internet and where should you turn? Well that is really a simple
question if you think about it using a little bit of common sense.
Would you buy parts for your car at the grocery store or have your
accountant design your marketing material? How about having someone
that just learned how to use an accounting software do your taxes? No
of course you wouldn't because it wouldn't make any sense what so
ever. Neither does using someone that just learned how to use website
tool to create websites. Your website is one the most important
marketing tools you have in your arsenal as a small business, yet most
business use website designers that just know how to use a software
develop this important marketing tool. For most it is simply lack of
knowledge, they expect website designers, or their "guy, to know these
things. Yet most of them simply just learned to use software that can
create websites and have no clue what it really takes to generate
business online or how to utilize your website as a marketing tool.
So before you hire that "guy" or a website designer, think about your
website as a marketing tool and evaluate if this person simply learned
how to use a piece of software or if they really understand what you
need to have a successful website. Unfortunately  99% of the time
you will be dealing with someone that knows how to setup a website
using free or purchased software but has no idea what it takes to
build a marketing tool that works for your business 24/7 and gets you
more business.
Come to think of it, I just learned how to use Quickbooks... do you
want to hire me to do your taxes?
