I was looking on ebay for some new automatic waterers and found some cheap chinese drink cups.  From the photos, I don't see how they could possibly work - or even mount.  I was wondering if anybody has tried them and what your experience was.

The ebay listing is:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Pack-New-Poultry-Water-Drinking-Cups-Chicken-Hen-Plastic-Automatic-Drinker/360963535510

They are plenty cheap, but if I had junk that didn't work, I probably sell it cheap too.

Dennis.

I've seen stuff like this before. Usually mounts to pipes running under low pressure. Used in intensive systems, not backyards.

Hey Dennis - this is the first DOM_BIRD thing I've seen in many a month.

I think the world is going to web forums instead of mailing lists.  Maybe some day, Dom_bird should switch over.

Anyhow, the normal drink cups have little paddles in them and sometimes the birds can't figure them out.  These have the plus of being paddle free and work off the weight of the water in the hinged cup.  But I should use the word "working" very loosely.  I don't know anyone who has actually tried them and after studying the photos, I don't see how they could work.  I mean, it looks like they want you to stick them in little baskets, but if you do that, the cup can't cut off.

I would want to know what type of plastic that is.

Probably ABS - with a little lead, arsenic and broken glass added. Same
stuff they put in the Chinese made dog food.

To All :

I don't use cups or pipes or any type pan to deliver water.  My birds have the water sprinkler system in our yard.  I water the grass here often enough ...... 12 hrs a day since its 2+ acres.  The geese were congregating at one location and bellow for their breakfast so I changed feeding the locations or else they end up mowing the grass to short.  We're moving away from this place to an 11 acre lot with a small stream and spring.  I won't need to water much more than chicks in cages.  Kelly nr Moxee

You're going to have chickens pooping in a stream?? That doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

No worry ...... the modest trickle of water from the spring goes underground 100 ft SE of an elk wallow ..... 1 elk drops more poo in the wallow daily ..... doing more damage to the water purity than my 15 chickens could possible do in a year.  There's a transient herd of elk on the property every other day .... 4-7 animals ...... + mule deer nightly.  I'll definitely allow my chickens & guineas to fly over the fence to drink water.  There are thousands of wild birds in the area doing the same.  Wild Canadian geese and Mallard ducks have nested along the stream for years.  I'd like to allow my 2 geese & 2 ducks access to the stream .... but they might not find their way back home. They'll be fenced in ...... safe from coyotes and stray dogs and confined so they don't get lost down stream.

Oh, OK, looks like you'll only have geese and ducks in a few months, anyway lol. You must really be looking forward to living there. Sounds nice to me, too.

Michelle,  My chickens & guineas fly or hop over the fence here daily to go to the stream in from of our house ...... I've had poultry here for 12 years.  There have been a couple fatalities each year from stray dogs but the guineas are very cautious any more and my chickens are Gamefowl breed ...... even more cautious and flighty than guineas.  I have had to resort to SSS at times ...... every other year actually.  Stray dogs are few and far between any more.  Kelly
