Hello all,

What has anyone found to be the best and cheapest way to get some partridge silkie chicks or hatching eggs? I only want about 6 chicks total, not the 15 or 25 that most hatcheries I am finding want. Any suggestions?

See if you have any chicken loving neighbors to split an order with. :-)  That often works.

Hi Laura,

Try advertising as a "want" on Craigslist, look for local livestock auctions, join a Silkie list and ask for help. Not cheap, but unless you have someone local who breeds them,

Contact the Silkie club for a list of breeders in your area.

There are 3 chicken breeds that do exceptionally well hatching
eggs;....Gamefowl, Silkies, Cochin. I use Gamefowl hens for hatching
all kinds of eggs;....goose, duck, chicken, turkey, peafowl, guinea
fowl. Fun to watch a hen with a brood of ducklings following her
around the yard.

Guineas are a bit rough and tumble around chickens so I have been
hesitant to ever keep Silkies in the same area since they have a soft
spot on top of their head. Gamefowl chickens don't give any ground to
guineas. Silkies are notoriously broody....but then Gamefowl are
surely better at brooding the hatchlings (my opinion). Cochin are
gentle mothers like Silkies.....and the Gamefowl won't let anyone or
thing near their babies. I've kept the Gamefowl now for 8
years....couldn't bear to be without them. Last year I added
Roundhead & Law Grey bloodlines. These new bloodlines are bigger and
a bit more beautiful Gamefowl than what I've had in prior years. This
year my 6 Gamefowl hens will be hatching exhibition dewlapped Toulouse
goose eggs...up to 30 of them and India Blue Peafowl eggs, and a few
of the deep keeled exhibition Rouen duck eggs too.

I second the motion for game hens making excellent mothers. :-)
A couple of my girls had spurs...

So do Phoenix, and you don't need to worry about the roos in your flock.

All,

My Gamefowl hens also have spurs....which is fairly normal "attire"
for half of the various bloodlines;....Hatch, Butcher, Roundhead, etc.

I had a pair of black silkies a few years ago; the hen never went broody. I had to use my crevecoeur to hatch their eggs, then I sold the entire silkie "family." Just saying, there are always individual differences within chicken breeds.

I'll second the Phoenix as Moms, and the roos are not terribly confrontational. My Silvers are pretty mellow all around.

Barry was making a joke of how some folks from southern states
pronounce Partridge ...without the R sound....not being insulting. I
lived in NC and VA for a while and I know that many there are prone to
dropping the "R" in words. I taught English at a major
university....took several linguistics courses over the years.....am
in tune with dialects. Southerners do have a dialect.

Yes. I just like to play with language and there it was. So I did.

Actually if one were to pronounce the word as spelled, pat-ridge, more likely would be from Boston. After 37 years in the Carolinas and a degree from USC-Columbia, also as mother of three Columbia-born adults, I claim honorary Southernitude.

<G> The R is there it is just so softly meshed with the long a as it give it that delightful
pawtidge  sound.

The northerners just speak much more sharply!

The dialect from one corner of the US to another leaves for no dullness of everyone speaking the same.

Paaaaahtridge

yup....Barry simplified the spelling some by leaving out the several
extra "A's" but that is precisely how I heard it when I lived in Va &
NC.
