Hey all,
I seem to have gotten a batch of chickens that have really no sense of being a bird. I have had to teach them to go into the coop at night (which they do themselves kind of randomly--or not). But, they still won't roost. I have roosts that are about 16" off the coop floor and ones that are higher. Should I set up "training perches" that are lower? Should I stick one on the roost as an example? Any good tips?

Thanks :)

Some breeds are like that.  They will also be the ones that the coon will get so watch out.  I wouldn't let them out of the coop if they can't figure out how to get back in by themselves.  Assuming that they wont roast in there.

My perches are about 4 and 5 feet off the ground.  Maybe they would prefer a higher one.

Dennis.

You just go in every night after dark and put them on the roosts.
Eventually they'll get it.

These are RIR, Buff/RIR mix, Rock and Australorp (I think--it's black). They are in a coop/run that is fully enclosed (b/c of the coon issue). I did have a coon show up and they were flipping out and then I realized they were huddling in the corner of the run.

I'll try "teaching" them to sit on the perch :P Doh. Just my idea of what I'd like to be doing in the evening haha.

Thanks,

K

I have never heard of this, Karen.  Usually mine try to get up high after a couple weeks from hatch.  What breed are they?
