Hello all,
I have been just reading emails for a long time, and haven’t written in a while. I followed this group a lot many years ago when I was just starting out. Since then years have passed and I now finally have a house and can have chickens where I live. No HOA, or CCR’s to worry about. For my city I can have only hens and was wondering could I keep just one rooster pheasant since they are much quieter in with some chickens. I am looking at getting a 8x4 walk in size pen and putting them all together and maybe adding a run. I am thinking about 6 hens, and then one rooster pheasant. Does anyone think that will work? And if so what breed of pheasant, and what breeds of chickens would get along. I also don’t want either to spread diseases to each other. I used Silkies years ago to raise pheasant but separated them as soon as the pheasant feathered out. For chickens I am thinking of silkies, maybe a Easter Egger or two, maybe a Jersey Giant, not sure yet, but the gentler non- flighty breeds. If this won’t work I will be perfectly happy to just have chickens. Just wondering if I could have a different male bird since they won’t let me have a rooster.

Thanks for any and all input,

Laura

Pheasant roosters are not classified as the kind of offending poultry in the city ordinances that ban rooster.  No one is going to complain about a pheasant.

Hi Laura,

I can't help with pheasants, but why do you want to add a male? The hens won't care as long as they're safe...

Seems to me that people will complain about many things that we would think are relatively innocuous because we're accustomed to living with poultry. I can easily imagine wording of city ordinances that would prohibit pheasants altogether.

Everyone hates Roosters.  It's terrible.   They crow during the day sometimes and crow in the morning and get tons of complains, and sometimes a citation so I had to make something sound proof to store them until 9 am.

As for Easter Eggers I always have a few chicks around...and hens if you are so interested, but now in summer, shipping for large fowl is tough, so chicks is best.

has good prices too.

One thought is to get a bantam rooster.  They are much less loud.  Guinea roosters do not crow, but you have the occasional alarm sounding off and occasional chattering if they are unhappy about something.

I have four Orpington roosters.  Two Blue, two Buff.  They are very gentle and friendly.  Having grown up in Vermont and often on a farm, the crowing is a symbol of freedom, of wonderful country living.

Sounds great to me. You'll get the pretty without breaking the law!
I'd go for a Ringneck if you also get the Jersey Giant hen. If you
stick with the smaller breeds, EEs and bantams, you might enjoy a
Golden.
