Hi, it's Glee in Calif. Anyone still on this list from the 1990's? I am
on just one acre in Butte Co. now, left my little farm in the Siskiyous 10
years ago and still adjusting to having only lady bantams, no geese, guinea
    hens, goats, ducks, etc.

    Michele Bee <miche...@gmail.com> Jun 25 11:28PM -0700

I have moved from the Carolinas to the Nevada desert and once again am
taking care of chickens . . . in addition to my husband's sheep, seven
dogs, cat, and parrot. The best part of my day is letting the chickens out
of their yard and watching them run flapping across the dogs' yard to the
yard surrounding the sheep pen so they can bathe themselves in sheep poop
    dust.

    Dennis <n4m...@gmail.com> Jun 26 07:47AM -0400

I'm still here too. I don't have that many chickens these days, but I'm still raising them. Mostly dominiques.

Nice to hear from you all.  It's funny that the list is so inactive with chickens becoming so much more popular since Dombird started in the 90's!  Has anyone read Farm City (Oakland)?

Watching for foxes here too. And fishers.

I've been on this list from waaaay back in the beginning before there were free lists. The list was a list-serve list run on a server in Poland, I think. And the list owner was a horse person maybe? I'm sure Barry and Dennis would remember.

Still have chickens of course, turkeys and guineas.

Yes, she wanted to focus more on the horse stuff and then gave DOM_BIRD to me.  She might still be a member here.  I don't know for sure.  We ran out of the University of Warsaw in Poland I think until the ISP's started using MAPS to blacklist servers they considered to be spammers.  The result was that P-Learn was blacklisted and we were forced to move to a different server.  Then egroups, then taken over by yahoo, now google.

I hope some day to get us over on our own web based forum some day, but I haven't had time to work on the software.  Google originally had a few nice features, but they dumped a lot of them so right now we actually have less than we had at Plearn.  :(

It's coyotes here at the moment. Have a feeling someone may have eliminated the long-time bobcats leaving a space for the coyotes to fill.

Does anyone know if scaly leg mites can infect around the toenail on a turkey's center toe? It's just the tom, and he's the only one with scaly leg mites.

Thanks,
Pam

How much has changed!

I'm still, here, too, although coyote wiped out all of my Muscovy, save one, last year.

A rooster from a neighboring farm (where all of the other chickens were killed by the coyote) sought refuge in my duck pens until the ducks were killed. He then moved into our garage for safety and has stayed. So, now I have a rooster and a drake.

Glad to see familiar names still here.

Yes I read the book by Nova Somebody.    Funny I was just thinking that I had left the list.
Good to hear it's still around.

To All on the list from 2002 ..... I am still on the list too.   The lack of interest is disappointing.  A plethora of alternate information sources (mostly poor) has reduced the need to access this forum.  People are easily satisfied and as a result they choose the 1st answer they find that "fits".

There many websites masquerading as legitimate problem solving poultry venues.

I would agree with you Kelly but I think most people no matter what they say, still think of the chook as a product and not an animal.

I am not familiar with raising turkeys, but have chickens and guineas.  I would try spraying on his toes and legs that red or blue medication that comes in a spray can for farm animals. You can get it at any farm supply place.  It sticks on the skin of the animal regardless if the skin is wet or dry.
Also, dust spots where the tom perches at night with D.E.  I spread it on all of my roosts even though I don't have mites, knock on wood.
Of course as you know, petroleum works great on poultry leggs and feet.  No mites can survive that.

Pat, thanks so much for your thoughts. We've treated him with vetrx, sevin mixed with Vicks, have DE on the floor of the coop and in the dust box.

His legs look better but on the middle toe around the nail is still red, irritated and kind of warty and swollen looking. I don't know if that would be the mites or something else.

He never roosts on the pole like the hens do but stays on the floor. We've only had turkeys a couple of years so I'm at a loss. The vet charges $60 for an OV and wants us to bring him to the office which probably isn't going to happen.

I'd totally forgotten abt Blu-kote. Will get some tomorrow. I'll bet that does it.

Thanks!
Pam

Yes, and as you know the Blu Kote doesn't attract attention of other flock members as does the red.
Could it be bumblefoot?

I don't think it's bumble foot unless that looks different in turkeys. The pads of his feet seem ok. It's just around the toenails of the middle toes. Will let you know how the BluKote works out.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. We appreciate your help.

I think the list would do better switching to a Facebook format.  The google groups don’t seem near as popular as even the yahoo groups.  Many people don’t like the format, and so many lists are moving to a FB presence.

I checked my "Avoid the Vet" poultry book and the "Chicken Health Handbook".  Not much in either regarding toe problems.  Most advice is on bumblefoot and scaly leg mites.  One suggestion for natural remedy is using garlic or aloe vera.  Soak 4 garlic cloves in olive oil overnight and then apply to the legs.  To treat a wound, crush garlic on gauze and tape it to the wound.
I think its important to deal with the infection first and then do the recovery treatment to keep new pests from invading the area.
There is also a website called "The Coop". It is a forum for poultry owners sponsored by a major University.  It is information only, not a chatty kind of site.  They have outstanding people from around the world who are experts on disease, genetics, etc.

To All,

I've added both deep keeled "Exhibition" Toulouse & Rouen Ducks + India Blue peafowl in the last few years.  I still keep guineas, chickens and pigeons ..... I got rid of my Western Rio Grande turkeys.  I bought them from a fellow in Oregon.

That's Blue Kote.  Tractor Supply and AGway have it.

Thanks, Sigo. Our feed store carries Wound Kote but I think the original Blu Kote might be better. Dennis found it at a Tractor Supply abt an hour from here. If we can’t make it out there, I’ll order it from the link you sent.

I’m going to try to get some close ups of the tom’s feet. Maybe somebody on The Coop will be able to identify what it is.

Thanks so much for your help.

You're welcome Pam.  I never heard of Wound Kote but it sounds very similar to Liquid Bandage, which I sprayed on the head of battered chick recently.  After about a week, I soaked it off and it was totally infected, cleaned it again, applied betadine and the Liquid Bandage.  It is sold for dogs and cats at Tractor, but the state he was in was horrible and I figured I may as give it the old college try, he had nothing to lose.  The little fellow, 6 weeks later, (he was about 3 weeks old at the time) is doing great though from the attack he is blind in one eye -- so I call him One Eyed Jack.

Wound Kote is here.   http://shorl.com/rudofohokopa

I have the dip stick blue-kote and it does not create a liquid bandage; maybe that's the difference between the dip and the spray.  I don't know.  I do know that the dip is impossible to get rid of.

Best of luck, Sigo

You may want to check the label. Some of the Blu Kote type products say not to be used on food animals. Some are ok, others not.

My old tom had swelling around a toe nail and I used compresses (probably with something to draw out whatever was causing it) and maybe even soaked it - too long ago for me to recall exactly. It did get better.

If you can get a picture, it might help.
