Class,
Thanks for coming out for the first Monday night class (I know
weeknights are the hardest times to try and get motivated, especially
after 7pm).
Moving forward, we will be working off of a initial rails root project
(Food Social Network), and we will be writing the code in class. This
seems to be the best approach and the most engaging activity, so I
apologize for the burger builder rails application ( I know there was
a lot to take in, and I am tailoring the class to improve that
process ).
This week for homework.
1. Pick up a good Rails book. Think of this as your study companion
and friend. I had made recommendations in the Pages section of this
Google Group, but most beginning Rails 3 books will cover most of the
same material.
2. Read through the first 3 - 5 chapters, and go through the workshops
in the books. (Beginning Rails 3 by Apress is a good jump off point)
3. If you have the time, Add some new logic to the Burger Madness
application. Maybe, allow users to edit the burgers, or allow Users to
purchase a pre-made burger for a set price (then track how many users
ordered the same burger). *Think has_and_belongs_to_many
(ActiveRecord)
4. Come to class with questions, and problems / issues, but also take
a stab at solving the issue first, and then if your still having
problems, I will make myself available to answer individual questions
during the last 30m of class.
On a Side note, (pending his schedule) we will probably have a TA for
the class named Paul Hamann. He is a talented Ruby programmer with a
lot of experience with TDD and BDD (Test Driven Development and
Behavior Driven Development), he will be available to help out as well
during the class.
