JAWSis a screen reader for Microsoft Windows offered by Freedom Scientific, Inc. JAWS will assist users who are blind or low-vision to use a Windows computer. JAWS has a variety of features, including Braille support, multi-lingual speech synthesis, and multi-screen support.
JAWS may be configured to launch when a user logs into Windows, or it may be launched manually by double-clicking on the desktop icon or from the JAWS entry in the Start Menu. Refer to the JAWS Quick Start Guide for more ways to start JAWS.
JAWS is highly configurable, and a discussion of the configuration options for JAWS is beyond the scope of this document. A screenshot of the basic settings windows for JAWS is shown in Figure 2 below. The reader is encouraged to read the documentation included with JAWS or to click on one of the links on the JAWS documentation page.
Has anyone else noticed that the latest versions of Icloud and Itunes have lost some accessibility with the JAWS screen reader? I can't navigate Icloud hardly at all, and Itunes is hit or miss. Crazy thing is, Narrator in Windows 10, makes those apps more accessible than JAWS does. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this, and if there is a work-around besides having to load narrator, every time I want to use one of these apps on my windows machine. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Also it might be how old the PC is. If you have a fast PC and good processer it might help. I am able to create playlist, find a song, go to the sstore, and search for an album or song with no problem. I am able to ad albums from my external to iTunes. Play my audiobooks.
I've had this problem sincejaws 2021. Every time I tab around iTunes, only a few of the fields are spoken. I have to bounce between Windows Narrator and Jaws. I'm using Windows 10 and the latest version of Jaws.
On the computer with the specifications I listed above, iTunes is extremely slow, to the point that it almost freezes the machine. I have to exit iTunes, in order for the machine to return to normal. And it could be the amount of podcasts that I currently have, which at the moment, is over 300.
Has anyone else seen this issue?
one thing that folks might try when using JAWS is to go into the JAWS Settings and search for the "Use Accessibility Driver" setting. In older versions of JAWS, this option was checked which means that JAWS is using the legacy OSM method of detecting text on the screen. Due to changes under the hood of newer versions of Windows, FS has been moving to the new GDI-Hooking method of capturing text written to the display. Thus many newer applications with newer versions of Windows will not work well with the legacy driver. Uncheck the "Use Accessibility" setting to use the newer driver. That helps with many programs and will be the approach used by future versions of JAWS.
Just as an aside, I've never found the UI of iTunes to be very user friendly, not only to those using screen readers, but also to sighted folks who often complain about it. Apple could have done a better job here for everyone.
As for iCloud on the PC, again, it has never been as accessible as one would like it to be. again, Apple could have done better here, but I don't think they give attention to having their apps work on the PC as muchy as they do on their own devices.
If you download iTunes from apple's site, it seems to work better than the version you get from the Microsoft Store. I'm hoping that will change with the updates that are supposed to be made to the store as Windows 11 grows, but we'll see.
I am legally blind - paperless by need - and use a screen reader called JAWS. I can not get JAWS to read anything in the evernote desktop application for windows. I am a lawyer and run my own consulting practice, but will not recommend any product that I can't use with JAWS. I love evernote, so any ideas from the community would be greatly appreciated.
I am also a blind person using JAWS 15 and Windows 7 (64 bit). Evernote notes do not appear to have accessible text on the desktop version of Evernote. The notes can be emailed, copied to a text editor, viewed on an IOS device or in the Evernote Mobile versions. It is impossible to conclude that this is anything other than a technical problem with the Evernote desktop product.
I have reduced vision. In older versions of Evernote, I was able to resize the fonts in my web-clipped notes to something I could use. With new versions, I lost access to *thousands* of notes because the font was set at the Evernote system default size, and it could not be changed without producing lines of overlapping text. Evernote has been completely unresponsive. They do not appear to care whether their product is accessible or not.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but for Windows screen readers, the challenge is to convey the meaning of computer graphics in far fewer words than that. In this Product Evaluation, we compare the ability of two leading screen readers to provide access to Windows and key applications. The programs were not compared directly with each other and were rated on a scale of 0 to 5 as follows:
JAWS for Windows (JFW) provides a set of basic speech commands enhanced by sophisticated, program-specific scripts. These scripts fine-tune JFW for particular Windows applications. Henter-Joyce provides well-written scripts for many popular applications, and JFW's performance excels in these applications.
JFW simplifies the reading of the screen by presenting it as a series of lines of text, even when the text is scattered and not actually linear. This feature provides a reliable way to read the current line in a word processor and also the highlighted item in a dialog box.
JFW supports numerous refreshable braille displays and several languages. Eloquence software speech is included, so casual computer users with sound cards can avoid spending the additional several hundred dollars to buy a high-quality hardware synthesizer.
JFW installed easily from Windows, except on some test machines with incompatible video cards. Video card problems were solved by installing drivers from the Windows CD-ROM. (It was necessary to use another screen reader or sighted assistance to perform this operation.) If a sound card is available, the installation uses Eloquence to provide speech. Each time JFW is updated, even if the merge utility that preserves user settings is run, the new version is installed to a new directory, giving multiple versions, which can cause confusion. JFW's copy-protection feature can also cause unexpected problems. For example, in one test case, we had to reinsert our authorization disk during the upgrade. In another instance, an overnight upgrade to our system erased the hidden file JFW uses as authorization, and the program became a demonstration copy until we "reauthorized" it. The manual is available in print and on disk. A cassette tutorial and a braille quick-reference guide are included. Extensive on-line help is provided for JFW commands and some application commands.
JFW read text and menus in both word processors tested. It identified and read the buttons in most dialog boxes but often did not read the messages in these and other programs. In WordPerfect, it sometimes made errors in identifying control buttons, such as misidentifying radio buttons, leaving us unaware that choosing that option would change another option.
JFW 3.31 has a special "Forms mode" exclusively for reading forms on the Web. Pressing Enter on part of the form, such as the place for entering text, begins the Forms mode. Field and form-element labels, except those of combo boxes, are generally read.
JFW has some advanced Web-reading features. There are hot keys to bring up a list of links on a Web page, to skip the navigation links and go to the start of the text, and to find the first edit box of a form. This last hot key, however, often failed to find input fields and should not be relied on to indicate the absence of forms on a page. The Find feature is a powerful tool for jumping directly to text of interest.
