Is it appropriate to promote the Liverpool Revolutionary Communist Party on here?

I'm all for the social good, but revolutionary communism doesn't exactly have a healthy human rights or social history.

Socialist Alternative also seem to subscribe to ideals based on really quite nasty ideas and abuses of human rights as well. Why is this in here?

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I speak merely as a member of the DoES community but I don't view informing other members of our diverse community that events are happening as promotion, at least in the sense you seem to imply.

If an event is legal and falls within the requirements to be hosted with the DoES event space (or indeed elsewhere, whilst being of general interest to our community) then I feel it is entirely reasonable for members of the community to be informed of the existence of said event.

To do otherwise seems to me to be thought-policing of the highest order and very much antithetical to the basis upon which the DoES community is premised

"I may not like what you have to say, but I will support your right to say it" and so forth.

Just my 5c.

Kind Regards,

Alex

It's also worth noting that that weeknotes section is scraped directly from the DoES calendar with no human intervention. If there was a Godzilla convention being held here, it would appear.

Is it permitted to put on any political events on the calendar then, if you're a member? e.g. Liberal Democrats, Labour, Tommy Robinson marches?

Sorry, if it's in the space. I'm trying to sift through my usual morning pile of to-dos.

Those are events that are being hosted in DoES. If the event is being hosted in DoES and is in our calendar, then it will automatically show up on weeknotes.

I’ll chip in to note that groups booking the event space are required to follow the Safe Spaces policy. So if there’s any evidence of that policy not being followed, when in the space, then directors or grievance officers should be contacted (as described at the end of the policy).

Yes, sorry. It's kind of even worse then.

Can somebody hold Tommy Robinson community meetings in the space then? What's the line on political activity?

Hi Dave,

Yes it's in the space. More than happy to chat further on opinions in a continuing friendly positive manner. Probably best if we don't do it here as people get frustrated at perceived SPAM but I would be happy to discuss views in DMs or IRL.

KR, Alex

If someone wanted to host a Yaxley-Lennon event, they could certainly ask, and it would be discussed as to whether we felt it fell within the interests of the community.

I feel like there's some kind of gotcha being attempted here, but it's no secret that the ethos of DoES - inclusive, welcoming and open to all - naturally appeals to people that are going to be more inclined to go to a meeting held by Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! than to one held to discuss stopping immigration and burning down hotels that house refugees.

Thank you Dave for asking the question and to everyone who responded. I/we didn’t necessarily feel it warranted a “director response” given that the community has offered good responses but we happened to have a directors meeting tonight so did discuss it there. I might as well just put the minutes for that item here:

* Discussion about the events calendar in the weeknotes implying endorsement of specific groups
    * Following this week's weeknotes, there has been a discussion about DoES being seen to endorse groups who are holding events in our event space.  Discussions were held well by members of the DoES community, all discussions were kept respectful despite differing opinions.
    * [ACTION] Adrian to look at changing the wording on the weeknotes for the events, from “Coming up in the next week” to something a bit different
    * [ACTION] John to reply to the weeknotes email thread to say that we have discussed the issues raised in the directors meeting to acknowledge what has been talked about and to clarify that events showing up in the weeknotes doesn’t mean that they are endorsed by DoES.

So the main point of change is that we might tweak the wording to make it clearer in the week notes (and elsewhere if necessary) that these are events that happen to be going on in our space rather than being “DoES Events”.

There have certainly been events held at DoES that have been Political with a capital P. The Green Party was what I had in mind and a search in the calendar suggests that’s right. The council has also held events here too which probably counts.

Sean does mention "being within the interests of the community" but I don’t think that has been an absolute requirement for the free access to the events room (or paid). That said we will always listen to our community so if there was an event that on the surface appeared fine and we agreed to host it, but the community made it clear to us that they didn’t agree (ideally giving reasons why not) we would listen to that.

John
