Researchers from the National Oceanography centre have visited maker night to look at using our workshop to make a simple version of the mechanical tide prediction machines that were used at Bidston to provide tide data. They're hoping to make something that demonstrates the principle for educational outreach.

To help us help them make a new machine they have arranged for members of the DoES community to visit NOC and see the machines in action. There is limited space at the centre so they've asked us to limit numbers for this visit. So I've set up an event on our Mobilizon instance to gauge interest.

Hi all,

I just want to say a big thank-you to Chris et al for organising a lovely trip to meet with the folks over at the NOC. Does this qualify as an Epic Trip?

It was super enjoyable and super fun. Loved seeing those analogue computers from the 1900's and 1950's then sitting chatting about the work they do over there and the relevancy to our world today. I also LOVED the chap talking about "computers" and realising he was talking about the REAL computers, the women who used to manage these devices to "compute". Wow.

And just a word to the wise... We popped into the place along from Tesco Express for a bite to eat and the Chicken Shawarma at £3.50 was to die for! My new go to lunch place!

Thanks again,

Alex
