Upgrading from 1.7.0 to 1.7.1 on ubuntu trashed all the images on that machine. Is that expected?

I don't think so; for me the process went smoothly (Ubuntu 14.04)

The issue is that the default storage drivers changed. Something that I note is NOT in the release notes!
