Have you seen ‘mushroom gummies’ in a store near you? UVA Health experts warn about health risks

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - “Mushroom Gummies” are said to improve your brain health, but doctors say they’re making people sick. They’re being sold in our hometowns.

UVA Health experts say they’ve seen five people, including a three-year-old from our region, with a variety of symptoms. These include nausea, fast heart rate and chest pain, plus alternating between “being sleepy and being a little bit ramped up.

The patients were seen at hospitals in Salem,Lynchburg and Charlottesville.

UVA’s Poison Center tested five brands of the gummies sold in Virginia gas stations and smoke shops. Of those, they say three contained Psilocybin or Psilocin. Both, are psychedelics and illegal under state and federal law. They also contained stimulants like caffeine and substances like Kratom that produce opioid-like effects.

None of these ingredients were listed on the packaging.

“We’ve had since then, additional pediatric ingestions that have been called into our poison center and that’s another thing that just concerns me,” said Dr. Avery Michienzi with the Blue Ridge Poison Center.

Dr. Michienzi says these products are very easy to get your hands on.

“So that means more of these products are going to be at home, potentially around children. They’re colorful, they look like candy, they taste good and they smell good,” explained Dr. Michienzi.

UVA says the four adults who got sick from these took them intentionally; however, the three-year-old consumed two by accident and had to stay in the hospital overnight. Officials stress that just because a product may be legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.
