Hi all,

I'm a librarian just starting to explore DOAJ on behalf of a journal (International Journal of Nuclear Security) that the library hosts on our institutional repository. We wanted our hosted journals to have DOAJ's seal of approval (https://doaj.org/faq#seal), which requires that rights (dc:provenance) information is included. We had hoped that publishers could simply enter article-level metadata in the GUI and achieve these standards, but it doesn't look like there is an entry field for rights. Is the only way to get this seal to upload via the API? If so, the library will likely need to help quite a bit with this. To confirm, we need to upload metadata in oai_dc using the API. I wasn't sure if having a CC icon on each article page actually embedded anything into our metadata. Here's one of our example pages with the icon.

I attempted to look at the OAI for the journal's articles, but I'm not seeing the IJNS title in the OAI set list - https://www.doaj.org/oai?verb=ListSets. Can anyone give me advice on how to look at the existing metadata for these journal articles to determine what's missing to get the DOAJ seal? I did find the way to download the journal's metadata here and have attached the resulting data for IJNS.

Thanks so much for any advice you can share. Please also let me know if there are other resources or people I should get in contact with.

Sincerely,
Meredith

Dear Meredith

Thanks so much for your message. I have attempted to address your questions below, but do please let me know if there is something else which I can help with.

I have checked your journal record and the journal is only missing one criteria to qualify for the Seal. If you would like to know more about that, I would be very happy to discuss this outside of this forum.

All the best, Dom

DM: not quite, the criteria to be fulfilled for the Seal are here: https://doaj.org/application/new#seal

We had hoped that publishers could simply enter article-level metadata in the GUI and achieve these standards,

DM: there is a way to manually upload article metadata to us. To do that you have to log into your publisher account, click 'Publisher area' and then 'Enter article metadata': https://doaj.org/publisher/metadata

but it doesn't look like there is an entry field for rights. Is the only way to get this seal to upload via the API?

DM: no, the criteria regarding article metadata is only that it is provided to us. Also DOAJ requires that metadata is provided to us in JSON via the API or DOAJ XML via the upload interface.
