Dear everyone,
Soon I plan to use the journal search API (eg https://doaj.org/api/v1/search/journals/) to retrieve for example APC information, and I have one question :
What is the best for querying the journal search API : ISSN of Journal title ?

from a DOI, with Unpaywall API, I will get journal name and journal ISSNs (but I can not know if it is print or electronic ISSN)

problem can I occur if I make a query with an electronic ISSN and DOAJ API return the journal corresponding to the print-ISSN ... no ?

should I use the journal title instead ?

Greetings,
Maxence Larrieu

Hello Maxence,

If possible, you should use ISSN because they are always unique. Some journals do have the same Title. Only the ISSN will return the correct result.

It is right what you say: some journals have a Print ISSN and an Online ISSN but only one of those has been entered in DOAJ. I am not an expert on APIs but if there is any way for you to query on ISSN and double-check with the title afterwards, that should work for you.

By the way, we will be releasing a new version of our API later this month. See previous announcements in this group.

Hello Dom Mitchell and thank you for your answer.

one more question : If I have two ISSNs, a print and an online, which one should I use to query the DOAJ ?

Sincerest thanks
Maxence Larrieu

Hi Maxence,

You can use either although I think that more of our journals have Online ISSNs than Print ones.
