Nice to meet you,

I'm considering whether, for a given article's DOI, I can get its license information using the public API, and how.
Could you tell me which APIs and which query params to use?

If the approach involves another org's API (such as Crossref REST API, DataCite REST API or so on), that would be fine as well.

Thank you.

PS:
For example, I'd like to get "CC BY 3.0" when I have a DOI `https://doi.org/10.3765/sp.8.14`.

Thanks.

Hello and thank you for your message.

It isn't currently possible to derive an articles license information from our metadata because we only capture license information at the journal level. Even though many publishers use one license per journal, in which case it would be easy to derive the article license, many use more than one license.

Sorry that we can't be of more help this time.

With kind regards

Thank you for your reply. I understand.
So, if only one license is used per journal, it would be easy to know the article license.

Then, when only one license is displayed for a journal, does this indicate that the license applies, without exception, to all the articles in DOAJ belonging to the journal? Or does it just indicate that the journal generally adopt the license?

Hello!

The change to our database that allowed journals to indicate that they accept several licenses happened in 2020. We already had thousands of journals indexed by then which had been accepted under the old rule of only allowing one license to be indicated. It would be safer, therefore, to assume that where one license is indicated, it means that the journal generally adopts the license.

All the best, Dom
