I wanted to send out a message to the list about where Do Want is now that we're well out of the holiday season...

- I have a number of small bug fixes and items working on my local development copy, These haven't been committed to the main repository because I also have a lot of incomplete code in there. I don't like marking bugs as fixed until they're actually committed to the main repository. It's a bit of a catch 22.

- My primary focus has been writing the auto-updater. This process provides and option to make a full backup of the system (done, except for the database dump) will do a remote check with a website and compare version information. If there is a more recent version available then the system downloads the update (in this case, it's actually a full copy of the most recent version of the app) and does a comparison of file checksums in the update against those running on your current deployment. It updates only what's necessary. A good portion of it is done, but I still need to write the components for testing the database structure. My goal is to make the next update the last you have to do by hand. All future updates will be managed from the administration interface.

- I've been using the system myself quite a bit and I'm noticing a lot of things that lack polish (Also, I just realized that 'polish' for shoes is spelled the same as 'polish', a person/place/thing from Poland). These things bug me the same way they bug you, and I'm doing my best to approach them.

- I've been contemplating a move to GitHub. GitHub doesn't really offer anything we're using that Google Code doesn't, except there is a much large dedicated programmer audience over there. While I doubt people browse Google Code looking for projects to work on, I know that people are doing it on GitHub. I'm interested in thoughts on this.

Also, I have to admit that I've taken a bit of a break from Do Want over the last several weeks because I spent a LOT of time on it over the past 6 months. I'm trying to balance my time more so I don't get completely burnt out.

I hope to have an update available in the near future here, to knock down some of the big outstanding bugs and annoyances.

Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to those of you who installed, migrated, and spent the holidays using Do Want. This project has moved from being a rewrite of PHPGiftReg to a full-fledged replacement app. I know there have been a number of, hiccups, and stumbles. Your sticking with it has really meant a lot to me. Thanks for your patience and dedication.

Thanks again
-Aaron

I like GitHub a lot, mainly for its (developer) social features. The
ability to fork, patch and issue a merge request is quite huge and all
via a snazzy interface. I admit I'm not really familiar with
development use of google code but it doesn't appear to offer such a
feature outside of posting patches to the mailing list. Looking at it
now, it looks like you can fork it, but its presence it rather tucked
away vs the developer-centric design of GitHub.

I also like their:

* news feeds, which allow me to track (stalk) projects and keep abreast
of the changes.
* graphical branch and fork views

And given GitHub gets a lot of attention, you would likely increase
your exposure, as you alluded to.

I say go for it!

-Chris
