Decorating a living room is simple when you have a great color palate
to work with. Some colors are easier to work with than others, but as
long as you choose complementary colors, your decor will come together
beautifully. For instance, lime green and orange do not mesh well with
each other, but lime green and white may be able to work together.
Paint is a great first step towards achieving your perfect decor, but
you also need to spice up your design with accessories. If you want to
try to add a little life to your room through color, first you need to
know what will look good. Take some time to study which colors work
well together and which colors are best used separately.
Generally when people think of blending colors, they think that white
matches everything. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. White
tends to be a catchall color that does not show any real personality.
People who want to show their personality through their decor should
use a variety colors to express themselves. For example, a person with
a more outgoing and vibrant personality would want brighter colors,
like reds and yellows. A person who has a darker personality may use
darker blues, blacks, and other solemn hues. To determine what colors
should go into a room people tend to look at the paint of the room
first.
Paint color is the first thing people notice when they walk in a room.
Paint sets the mood of the room. It gives the room its own certain
feel. A room which is painted in dark colors often makes visitors
apprehensive. However, brighter, warmer colors makes visitors feel at
home. After the wall color people tend to notice the floor next.
One great way to make your floor look fantastic is by using an area
rug. Even in carpeted living rooms, area rugs look fantastic. Area
rugs add depth to design. This look can apply to any type of flooring.
Spread out an area rug and watch your room change around you. In
addition to the aesthetic value this accessory adds, area rugs have
protective properties as well. Area rugs help to prevent dust
particles from floating freely in the air. They also protect your
flooring and provide cushion to your feet.
Next time you want to change up your room, consider how color can make
all the difference. Most people in their own houses want to feel at
home and relaxed. So they choose warm colors that accomplish this.
Everyone responds to colors differently, so choose the colors that are
best for you. Some may feel red and yellow are warm colors, while some
may think the combination of dark brown and off-white is more calming.
To make the room more personal, select your favorite colors and
incorporate them into the paint and area rugs to tell your visitors
that the room is yours. Following these tips will ensure a nice,
personal room. Do not hesitate to add your own ideas when designing a
color based room. Remember that this room must be personal as well as
colorful in order for you to enjoy it. Have fun, be creative, and use
the colors and accessories you love.

This sounds good, and probably is true in most situations, but let me
tell you this. I painted my bedroom white, with the rationale being
as follows. I wanted to tackle it myself; in my opinion, this color
is neutral; it's relatively easy to apply, as everything is white,
versus if the molding is white and the walls are of the different
color, then you have to be real precise while painting, whereas if
everything is white and you happened to overlap, you wouldn't even
notice. Besides, it's easy to repair; for example, if I hang
something on the wall, and then I want to move it, I would end up with
a nail hole. If my walls are white, I would just patch it, don't even
have to touch up, and it's fine. If on the other hand, my walls were
of some color, then it would be a bit of a hassle. I chose semi-gloss
paint, so it's washable, too. It works for me. As far as my
personality goes, I guess I just wanted to simplify the whole process
as much as I could. I don't really like spending too much time at one
project; I want to get done and get over with, and move on to the
next. Just my $0.02 worth.

All righty, so my curtains are red & white pattern, and so is my
comforter, and so will be my future area rug, I was thinking about one
of those shag rugs, can't match anything else. This will do for now.
I think that white walls go just fine with the different colored
accessories.

Anyway, this is not a real message board, now is it? It sounds more
like a lecture and I feel like I am in the classroom once again.
Hmmm...
