I've been using DMXis for quite a while now with a midi-floor
controller and an iPad. I'm getting to where some automation would be
helpful so I just installed Ableton Live 8. I'm trying to use DMXis as
a VST plugin in Ableton. The problem I am having is I can't figure out
how to make DMXis show up in the Plug-In Devices Browser. (I know I'm
missing something fundamental)

In Preference I have "Use VST Plug-In Custom Folder" turned "on"
But I don't know where to point the "VST Plug-In Custom Folder"

I've tried /applications/ because that is where the executable is (I
believe)
and I've tried /library/application support/enttec/ (just because)
but neither show DMXis as an available plugin.

The instructional video assumes you can get past this point: I
obiviously can't :-(

I'm using a MacBook Pro, and have used the standard installation paths
for Ableton and DMXis.

So what am I missing? (thanks in advance)

You can point it at any folder. Pick a folder where you want to put your plugins, and point it there.

But where is the plugin now?

It's wherever you told the installer to install it during the DMXIS setup process. You can choose any folder you like - maybe you forgot to install it?

I don't remember it being a choice (to install it or not)? Maybe I
should be asking a more fundamental question: what is the file name
(name+extension) I should be point toward?

Just reinstall DMXIS and point it somewhere you'll remember it (like your desktop). You can literally point Ableton at any directory, it honestly doesn't matter where you keep your plugins, and you can move your plugin folder at any point if you decide to keep them elsewhere.

Just in case anyone else finds themselves in the same boat as me: I
found DMXIS.VST by pointing the browser at
/library/audio (assuming you let DMXis install where ever it wanted to
on a Mac)

Future Weapons: Thank you for trying to assist me. Much appreciated.

No problem, send me an email if you have any other Ableton related DMXIS questions, that's what I use everyday.

For clarification: you can only choose the VST folder when installing
DMXIS on Windows systems. On OS X, the VST plugin is always installed
into "/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST" (the common system folder for all VST
plugins).

In Ableton, you simply need to enable "Use VST Plug-In System Folders"
under Preferences->File Folder.

Why not ask your question on forums.dmxis.com (the official forums which
replace this Google list) and then everyone can benefit from the solution?
