Lessons Learned – DMXIS with FCB1010
I won't get into the “How to” of programming the FCB1010 as this is covered very well by others. I will only show the settings that made my FCB1010 and DMXIS work together.
1. Kit: Stock FCB1010 v2.5.1E, Roland UM-One USB Interface, two Boss FS-5U momentary foot switches. 15' midi cable, midi coupler, Dell Lattitude E6500, XP Pro
2. Software: FCB1010 Midi Edit Utility v2.99-2 (by Ed Dixon)
3. Documentation: DMXIS Users Manual, FCB1010 Users Manual, Idiots Guide to the FCB1010, various DMXIS and FCB1010 forums
4. DMXIS Midi:
- Ch 15 Note commands change Bank
- Ch 16 Note commands change Preset
- PC (Program Change) command on ANY channel changes Preset
- CC (Change Controller (I saw one reference to Ch1-14 in a forum)
5. FCB1010 Switch1 and Switch2: These are not momentary, the are either latch on press or latch on release and require two presses for a single command to DMXIS. Because of this the can get out of sync. I chose to stick with using my two Boss FS-5U but changed them to only change Presets (single-click) and strobes (click and hold). Banks are controlled by FCB1010.
6. FCB1010 Global Configuration:
- PC1=Ch16, PC2-5=Ch1
- CC1=Ch1, CC2-Ch2,
- ExpA=Ch3, ExpB=Ch4
- Note=Ch15
- Sw1/2 not checked or on
- Note1: I could not enter Global Config mode with the Midi USB plugged in to my computer
- Note2: Every time I plugged the Midi USB back in I had to “Apply” Midi/Audio Settings in DMXIS twice to get them talking again.
7. FCB1010 Direct Select:
I configured my FCB1010 to Direct Select mode so I don't have to select and Bank then a Pedal. I simply press 01 for B0/P1, 21 for B2/P1. I then programed and numbered my Bank/Song list in DMXIS to match (e.g. 21 on FCB1010 selects Song 21 from DMXIS). Then I can write song numbering on my set list.
8. FCB1010 Pedal 1-10 Programming:
- B0/P1 = PC1 Ch1, Note1
- B2/P3 = PC1 Ch1, Note23, etc.
- Note: PC1 always is set to Channel 1 (1st Prest in the DMXIS Bank/Song)
9. FCB1010 Expression Pedal Programming:
Since I'm only controlling one device I programmed the same settings into every pedal combination.
- Note: I had to calibrate the Expression Pedals in order for them to begin sending data. I used the Midi I/O screen in the Midi Edit Utility to verify signal.
- B0/P1 = CC1 Ch3 Value 25, CC2 Ch4 Value127, ExpA Ch3 Minimum0 Maximum127 (controls DMXIS Mater Level), ExpB Ch4 Minimum0 Maximum70 (controls DMXIS Bank Tempo)
10. Challenges:
- Midi Edit Utility didn't seem to transmit or receive all data every time. Not sure why. I had to manually program the Notes in the end.
- Remember to unplug/replug midi USB cable and “Apply” Midi settings in DMXIS
Lessons Learned – DMXIS
1. Upon closing program and re-opening Banks resort alphabetically
2. Used preface of 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003 to force Banks (songs) into play list order for gig* (e.g. 0000-Pre-show (melo), 00001-Announcements( no movement), 0002-Lights-Journey, 0003-Save Me SF)
3. Set up Presets in song order (e.g. Intro-1, Intro-2, Verse-1, Verse-2, Chorus-1, Verse-3, Bridge-1, Lead-1, Chorus-2, Outro, Blackout, End (I hold Blackout for a few seconds and then switch to End (melo lights)
4. When switching to the next Bank/Song the last Preset (End) from the previous song continues until you press Preset Down. This allows you to start a new song right on the Intro.
5. Used a Kick/Snare board feed to control Sound Tracker and told the sound guy to make small adjustments if he saw the lights reacting either too strongly or not enough (hard to set the Sound Tracker Level outside of a real show).
6. When programming Presets select one you like from another song, then go back to your new song and create a New Preset. Overwrite Changes and the new Preset will be identical to the old. (mimics copy/paste).
7. Will use Press and Hold foot switch function (play last Preset in list while held) in the future for strobe or crowd-blinder Preset.
* Used two (2) Boss FS-5U foot switches set to single-click (Preset up/down) and double-click (Bank up/down). Note: Had some difficulty getting single/double-click timing right during live show.

I'm currently evaluating DMXIS for use with my band. Currently, we trigger a number of samplers, guitar settings and keyboard parts from several MIDI configurable foot pedals and drum pads. I know we can use standard momentary switches to move through presets, and it appears we can potentially set up some special functions to trigger within a preset from current MIDI controllers - but is there a way to have MIDI control duplicate the functions of the normal DMXIS footswitch for stepping through presets? While having a dedicated switch to step through presets could be used most of the time, it would be great if we could use some of these other performance triggers to also step through additional presets.
I don't see where MIDI preset control is currently possible. Is it?
It would also be nice if Preset Banks could be controlled via MIDI. We currently use an IOS based setlist app that controls MIDI initializations on all of our songs. It would be great if DMXIS banks could be called for each song this way, so I only have to manage the setlist from one source.
