"Des Moines Catholic Workers provide caring, hospitality" by David Graff, Minneapolis, DM Reg. Letter to Editor, April 27, 2017
Recently I had an inspiring two-day visit to the Des Moines Catholic Worker community. Not only are the members true to the message spelled out in the Sermon on the Mount, but they do so with remarkable efficiency and commitment. They serve regular meals throughout the week to 40 or more guests, distribute canned food, clothing and personal items donated by the Des Moines community.
Throughout all this, they manage to honor the dignity and worth of their guests, not pushing anyone through the line and out the door. On any given day, especially bad-weather days, the guests can linger, relax and find fellowship with each other and with volunteers.
The Catholic Worker has never depended on government funding and, in this era of increasing budget cuts, they provide a space for caring and hospitality. By recognizing the work the Des Moines Catholic Worker performs, and by supporting their mission through donations, the greater community may very well be honoring itself.
