Since all of us have hyperlinkable storage space, why doesn't Steve set up a subpage with hyperlinks to owners' pictures and/or pictures of their cars -- not complete albums, just a picture or two. We could send Steve the URL's, and he could hyperlink them on our behalf.

Sounds great to me.  I'm traveling today but will be back home tonight.  I'll even add a Linn to gulf coast deloreans.

I'm finally back home.  On another note, I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a vBulletin license to setup an actual forum instead of the email format.  What are the thoughts of everyone else?

There are pros and con's of both formats.  What I really like about the email format is I don't have to visit a stupid website every day to see what is going on.  As activity happens, I automatically get emails.  Since my email is tied to my phone, I know what is going on throughout the day.

A small handful of people have expressed interest in DMCToday but strayed away when they realized it was an email format.  I can remember two people telling me they weren't going to sign up simply because the format wasn't for them.

What are the thoughts of everyone else?  I for one like the email format since I don't have to go check another stupid website to know what is going on.  Bill already tried the forum format with DMCSouth and it died fairly fast, simply because people weren't going to it.

Currently we have 30 members.  I was wanting to give away $50 gift certificates once we reached 50 members but if this doesn't happen, I wouldn't mind spending the money on vBulletin software if there is a genuine interest.  Input?

DMCSouth forum software was free.

Actually, since the DMCSouth forum is still up & running, if you simply want to take over maintenance you can have a forum immediately.

All I ask in return is to keep a hyperlink to my YouTube account so my fire department buddy can find his Lionel train videos.

And you aren't allowed to laugh at my HTML coding -- I taught it myself one command at a time as I went along.

Nah.  DMCSouth sucks.  If we were to use the forum format I would purchase a vBulletin license and make a forum virtually identical to the one Sammy was recently banned from.

Oh great -- now I have to buy Brandon a *THIRD* case of freon.

Speaking of which: I saw a Big Lots commercial earlier tonight advertising its $6.77 freon ($5.42 after you pitch a hissy fit to the store manager). Haven't seen any Sam's Club freon commercials lately....

Brandon must have a pretty bad leak if he needs 3 cases of freon.  You can get boneless, black angus rib-eye steaks at Sam's club for $6.99 a pound while you are there picking up a case of 12 cans of r134a for $4.50 a can.  Can you get steak at Big Lots?

One of the big advantages of the forum format is the media presentation - attaching photos, images, videos, pdf's, etc without having to use an outside file server.

Of course, the big question then is would you require sign-up to see the photos, videos, files, etc like the forum that Sammy was recently banned from does, or would you permit anyone/everyone to see such attachments?

I believe information should be easily accessible for anyone.  Have you noticed the resources section on DMCToday.com?  The cross reference list and the workshop manual are freely available for anyone who wants the information.  It would be the same if we switched to a forum, as long as it is technically possible.

Talk was first on the scene with a friendly format, and they grabbed everyone. I chose to continue posting there because it was "independent" of dmch (whose dmchelp is also a failed forum) and it wasn't the marc levy show (dmcnews). Now that they have a long established userbase, it will take a LOT to turn people.

I think doing a vbulletin near copy is a good place to start... and partnering with vendors to cooperate in the effort wouldn't hurt either. If Ilan would reign in his mods instead of rubber stamping their bullying, I wouldn't be writing this. It is time for an alternative.

Ilan lost control of his own forum when the original .com crashed. Sean Mullins did the .org resurrect, beholding Ilan to him. That's also when moderation became a SEDOC seignory. Same dynamic as the DML (DMA) with a younger cast of characters.

One of these days we will all be somewhere else bad mouthing Steve Rice and DMCToday.

And that gosh awful imported freon he tried to get us to buy at Sam's Club.

That explains why Sean was so secretive (in person) about the old site crashing.  We met at his house shortly after the .org site went online and he made promises such as, "All the data is safe and your message counts will be restored".  He never would tell us what happened to the .com site.

I simply figured the old site got hacked or there was some sort of power struggle.

Sean still retains forum administrative privileges, and I suspect he maintains the website itself.

I suspect Sean's sudden departure from 24 hour 'round the clock moderation (he used to continuously monitor the forum at home, including a laptop in the garage, at work, and on his smart phone while traveling between the two) was an edict from:
a) his employer
b) his wife

I like the idea of an open forum where images are available regardless of membership.  It adds a better incentive to join.  I'd also like the forum to be primarily about the DeLorean instead of BTTF; not that it can't have a separate section, but that the "I need help with..." threads shouldn't become movie jokes.  Too many times has, "Have you tried hitting the steering wheel with your forehead?" been the first provided answer...

These are the same jokes that they whine about when people make when they have issues, yet complement each other on saying it and showing off their movie-related trinkets.

I originally tried to run the DMCSouth forum as an open forum. It very quickly got spam botted to death, and Eastern Europeans started using it to trade pirated video games.

I think it is safe to assume that when you lose your very url, that is indicative of some very butthurt person taking their ball and going home.

The original .com URL is still alive and kicking. Whoever registered it in 2005 has it until 2019, I assume Ilan.

There was a flurry of activity April/May 2011 after the original .com site crashed. Problem wasn't GoDaddy -- it was the forum software installed thereon. .org was registered first, also on GoDaddy, then .com was extended less than 30 days later. Does Ilan own .org too? GoDaddy is the proxy owner.

Perhaps the forum software was installed on a new domain in hopes of salvaging files still on .com.

I remember about 30 days of DMCTalk BETA testing. I had DMCSouth's forum up & running within 24 hours.

If I wasn't lazy and so broke I could have DMCToday running on vBulletin in less than 24 hours.   I'm about to head to bed but if there is enough interest I would purchase a vBulletin license myself.  I think the software/license only costs $249.

MyBB (DMCSouth's software) is free.

Perhaps you can save enough money on freon to afford a vBulletin license.

My neighborhood butcher has ribeyes for a little more than that, but they're leaner, more tender, and taste better than any steaks I've found at a grocery or big box store.

Sometimes price isn't everything. ;-)
