Man after God's heart

the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people. -1 Samuel 13:14

Someone asked several senior bankers in Asia what questions they like to ask most when interviewing newcomers. One of them replied: "What do you think is success? How will you succeed?" The chief executive of Citibank Singapore branch explained: "I want to understand the interviewer’s motivation for success, and know his core ideas and values. In order to find the right person."

What about God? How will God find suitable candidates? In 1 Samuel Chapter 16: 1-13, let us see an "interview". The prophet Samuel was appointed by God to find and anoint the king of Israel, and God gave Samuel the following conditions: " The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (v. 7)

The seven candidates who participated in the previous interview were rejected (verses 8-10), but the eighth candidate, the youngest son of Jesse David, was the least accomplished at the time, but he was chosen by God. Because he meets the important requirements that God expects: "I found David, the son of Jesse, who is a man after my heart and will do all my will." (Acts 13:22, new translation)

Although personal skills and qualifications are important considerations, important elements of character such as honesty, sincerity, integrity and humility cannot be ignored. This is of great significance to us: when we want to be God's good and faithful servants, we must not only pursue the advancement of skills and knowledge, but more importantly, we must become people who conform to God's will. What does it mean to meet God's will for you?

What do you have to do to follow God's heart every day?

God, please show me how to be the person you want.

耶和华已经寻着一个合祂心意的人。—撒母耳记上13章14节

有人问几位亚洲的资深银行家，他们最喜欢在面试新人时提出什么问题。其中一位回答：“你认为什么是成功？你会怎样获得成功？”这位花旗银行新加坡分行的执行长解释说：“我想了解面试者追求成功的动机，知道他的核心思想和价值观，从而找到合适的人选。”

那么上帝呢？祂会怎样寻找合适的人选呢？撒母耳记上16章1-13节，让我们看到一次的“面试”。先知撒母耳受上帝委派，前往寻找及膏立以色列的王，而上帝向撒母耳开出的条件为：“人是看外貌，耶和华是看内心。”（7节）

先前参与面试的七位候选人都遭到了否决（8-10节），但第八位应试者，也就是耶西最小的儿子大卫，虽然当时是最没有成就的，但却蒙上帝拣选，因他符合上帝所期待的重要条件：“我找到耶西的儿子大卫，他是合我心意的人，必遵行我的一切旨意。”（使徒行传13章22节，新译本）

虽然个人的技能与资历是重要的考量，然而也不可忽略举足轻重的品格要素，如诚实、真诚、正直以及谦卑。这对我们具有重大的意义：当我们想要成为上帝良善忠实的仆人时，不仅要追求技能与知识上的长进，更重要的是，我们要成为一个合上帝心意的人。
