Yes, this is very possible, and I did it! I opened the instrument, drilled a small hole in the back plate, then installed and wired a 1/8" jack in parallel with the internal slider switch. With a 1/8" plug on the end of a cable to a momentary switch -normally open- foot pedal. Works like a charm.
I ALSO tried a small liquid mercury switch wired in parallel to the slider switch inside the instrument's case so I could just nod and have the slider engage. This worked, but poorly as any extraneous head movement would often trigger the mercury switch.
